Principal's Report
We had a fantastic time at the Queensland Museum Science Centre and Sparklab. The considerable amount of static and interactive displays was extensive and engaging. Some students made a quick dash to the Queensland Art Gallery, viewing some amazing indigenous, contemporary and traditional art. Students were so engaged by Sparklab that we did not get to GOMA. We discussed how Brisbane would be great venue for a camp, so we could have extra time to visit the other amazing learning opportunities our capital city provides. Our student behaviour was exemplary.
Mrs Mac and parents will investigate a HSS Camp Program following feedback from the idea of a Canberra trip. If you have any ideas, please let us know. The aim of the group is to create venues that are both diverse and affordable. A whole school camp within the locality will go ahead every 2nd year. Mrs Mac will then take the proposal to staff and back to our P&C.
Equity and excellence in the focus of all Queensland State Schools. The strategy includes;
The education strategy provides a roadmap for all areas of Education Qld. who aim to empower our staff, invest in digital innovation, school performance, and support. It seeks to foster collaboration between schools and community, and deliver sustainable investment in schools for the future. I believe Harlin SS is heading with conviction towards these goals and will continue to collaborate and modify our pedagogy to be the best we can. Mrs Mac will be in Toowoomba on November 8 & 9 for an Equity and Excellence Roadshow.
What a great performance from our ball games teams on Friday. Students chose to be in the team, knowing there was a commitment to training during Smart Moves and first break. Again, we focused on being humble in victory and defeat. What a delight to see the improvement in our ball skills and support for each other. In partnership with Linville SS, we were able to bring home the Overall Championship and Aggregate trophies. Year 5-6 were champions within their age group and will recieve medals. Special mention of our Year 3-4 group who participated twice in every event, as we only had one team. They were tremendous.
Staff and students look forward to our Seniors/Grandparents tomorrow afternoon. We do a great job of including our community and we value the wisdom and expertise of our seniors. Due to the heat, most of our activities will be indoors.
A reminder of pick-up times. School finishes at 3 pm. Students should be picked up soon after unless arrangements have been made with Mrs Mac. Students waiting for the bus, sit with the teacher on duty. Students waiting for parent pick up, sit under the shelter. With the sightings of snakes, students waiting for parents are not to be in the garden without a staff member. I ask that you please ensure students who leave, do not then return back to the grounds. Let's make sure everyone is safe.
Our final excursion for this year is a local history tour, for Year 3-6 next Tuesday, 31 October. Students will visit Stonehouse, the Moore/Linville Cemetery and the Condensery to consolidate studies in HASS this term. We are using the TSHS bus and private transport.
Swimming starts in Week 8. Time to find googles and a cap. The swimming carnival with Linville will be on Monday, 20 November.
Special thanks to our teaching staff as we celebrate World Teachers' Day this Friday. Thanks to Mrs Packenham, Mr Dennison, Miss Fisher, Mrs Cowley, Mr Smith, Ms Tailby, and Miss Graham for you outstanding contribution to our school. We appreciate your dedication and commitment.
This Friday, we also celebrate Day for Daniel. Teachers will be touching on the 3 key responses to an unsafe situation; React, Recognise and Report. Students are invited to wear red.
A big thank you to parents/carers making a quick response to the return of permission forms and payments.
Have a great week.
Regards
Mrs Jo McCormick

Prep - 2 News Mrs Packenham
It is so nice to be back at school! Thank you to Mrs Cowley who kept the learning happening in my absence! I provided Mrs Cowley with detailed planning so students were still moving through the curriculum as required. I was very happy to hear of how well behaved the students were and super impressed with the amount of school work completed, including Science activities to prepare for our visit to the Queensland Museum.
The excursion to the Queensland Museum and Spark Lab was definitely the highlight of Week 3! We saw dinosaur fossils and life-size dinosaur statues, were intrigued by a real (once-living) giant squid and juvenile white shark and many other animals that have been preserved. The students asked lots of questions as we moved through the Anzac Legacy Gallery and saw a real German Military Tank. There were many interactive displays in the museum and Spark Lab that the students engaged with. On Friday we used our museum visit as a stimulus for a writing task as our English unit this term revolves around writing and reading about objects and memories.
This week Charlie and Mac used their Show and Tell Vouchers which they purchased at the Harlin Hero Shop last term. Both boys shared awesome Lego creations made at home! See the photos below. On Tuesday afternoon we were joined by three lovely seniors, Hayley, Sommer and Adelaide. These girls used their Prep-2 Helper Vouchers and assisted with handwriting, reading and HASS tasks. It is always a pleasure to be joined by senior students!

Year 3-6 News Ms Fisher
In English, the senior class has been working hard on writing. We are learning to use conjunctions to expand our sentences. Students are wrangling coordinating conjunctions to build compound sentences and wrestling subordinating conjunctions to write complex sentences. In Week 2 we wrote about poo! In Week 3 we built sentences about plastic bottles. Not only are we practising our sentence writing in English, we have done it in Maths as well as a way of clarifying and reinforcing ideas.
Science has been really hands-on. 3s and 4s have investigated materials used for different kinds of gloves as well as testing various materials for their absorbency. 5s and 6s have experimented with dissolving salt in water to find the saturation point in different volumes of water. This week, they combined bicarbonate soda, tartaric acid, and water in different ways to see which combinations produced reactions.
