Dear School Community
Next week marks the halfway point of Term 3. Assessment tasks have begun, as we assess some areas weekly. Both classes have started their maths assessments, which will continue for the rest of the term. All students will also complete a reading/comprehension task and an English task. Every day counts to ensure your child has the best opportunity to succeed.
In Week 3, Sergeant Chayne shared his love of reading with students at parade. Reading remains our school-wide focus this year, and we are taking every opportunity to encourage it. There is no set homework other than 10–15 minutes of home reading each night. We need your support to ensure students are reading at home and returning their home readers. We’ve welcomed many guest speakers who’ve highlighted the importance of reading in their careers—please help us maintain momentum with this focus.
Best wishes to Bella, Alex, Eithan, Henrietta, and Harlan, who will represent Harlin State School at Ropehill Sports Ground on August 15. Thank you to the parents who are assisting with transport.
As part of our fortnightly PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) focus, we discussed how being open to new and sometimes challenging activities can lead to great opportunities. Sergeant Chayne spoke about the menial tasks he had to do as a new recruit before becoming a Sergeant. Similarly, bush dancing may not be everyone’s favourite, but once we got the hang of it, it turned into a wonderful community event. We also talked about the importance of joining in, working as a team, and preparing for our Line Dancing event on September 18 at Moore Hall. Please mark this date in your diary and return your BBQ order form so our wonderful P&C volunteers can cater for you and your family.
Traffic safety remains a high priority, especially as our school is located on the highway and adjacent to Les Smith Drive. Please remind your child/ren to avoid running out the gate. Students must stop and look both ways before crossing. Alarmingly, a student has run out in front of a staff member’s car twice in the last fortnight. Please help us reinforce safe behaviour.
Have you seen our new OLA building? The epoxy flooring looks fantastic! Thanks to the P&C, we also have a brand-new fridge, and it’s full steam ahead with filling tummies and introducing delicious food from our permaculture garden.
Unfortunately, the start date for the playground build has been delayed by two weeks, now beginning on August 25. I’m especially eager for our Year 6 students to be part of the opening ceremony and am hopeful for a smooth and speedy build.
A reminder that the Ekka public holiday is this coming Monday.
Wishing you a safe and relaxing weekend. We’ll see everyone back at school on Tuesday, August 12.

Mr. and Mrs. Blackmore for cementing pads for the veggie pods.
Al Bechly and Kip Lennon for moving the interactive whiteboard up to the library.
Thanks to Year 4-6 parents who are helping with transportation of students to TSS. This week Mrs. Thallon and Mrs. Carey had volunteered, even though the event was cancelled due to rain.
Al Bechly for delivering the new fridge to the OLA, and Rob and Kip for giving a hand this morning.
Katie Buckley for fabulous flyers for our Line Dancing night at the Moore Hall.

Year P - 3 News

All students returned reading folders today! Yahoo!
This fortnight we have learnt about similes, compound sentences and adverbs as helpers for better and more exciting writing. We are learning to summarise a chapter, and we had our older students help us today.
In maths, students are investigating measurement including grams and kilograms, millimetres and meters, and millilitres and litres. We are learning how to read the dial indicators on several types of scales, and thermometers that we need to read from the bottom! P-2 students are investigating fractions.
In HASS, we are now investigating the Great Artesian Basin and how water has slowly trickled all the way to South Australia since the time of the dinosaurs. https://youtu.be/oI3QI5SRBFY One student did say the Great Artesian Basin was in Indonesia, so a bit more work to do here!
In Art, we have used our fantasy theme to create walking monsters from a design students created last week.
Mr Glover has a new fully automatic egg incubator and is waiting for fertile eggs so we can again hatch chickens. When they are a few weeks old, we will return them to Mr Glover. Lots of curriculum opportunities will eventuate.
P-3 Science
We’re all about forces! Students are investigating games involving forces – push and pull and even magnetic forces. This week, we have started making a pinball game to understand how obstacles can make an object change direction. Our older students are learning to draw force diagrams with arrows showing the direction of forces.
Any cardboard boxes that might otherwise go to the recycling bin, please drop in at school. Students will make a games arcade for the end of term!

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

Senior class Term 3, Week 4
Our Fantasy unit is going swimmingly. We have nearly finished reading Rowan of Rin! Students will complete their reading assessment for the novel next week. Following that, they will investigate text structures and language features more closely so that they can write an engaging fantasy story of their own.
Students have been practising writing summaries of chapters, engaging in peer feedback to improve their summaries.

Maths has been all about fractions. Students have played games involving equivalent fractions and mixed fractions. Our best time for our class game linking common fractions and decimal fractions was 2:06 minutes – for 32 cards … That’s amazing! They have investigated percentages too, as well as adding and subtracting fractions.

In Science we have created a class chart to organise our learning about renewable and non-renewable energy sources. We have also deconstructed an electrical device to analyse the components of a system. This is leading to students designing a security system involving electrical circuits.

This week in HASS students learnt about the Great Artesian Basin. It took us a little bit to get our heads around how it works, but what an amazing water source!
Some students are making impressive progress on our reading chart but we can do better! Please make sure reading folders come in every Monday with reading signed off. 😊

PLANT STALL
Delicious fresh veggies are now available at the front gate. Look for the Styrofoam box.
All proceeds go back into making our veggie patch even greater.
Mrs Blackmore has put our veggie pods together and will start filling them with soil. They were a bit of a challenge, but she had some wonderful helpers.
Thank you to the students who helped, you know who you are.
Special thank you to Eliza and Archie for potting up some new plants for our stall.
CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
Dave and Jo from the Harlin Hotel have started donating some of their containers to us, so if you are calling in for a drink, don’t forget to go out the back and put your empties in our bin. This will help us fill our bags and bin quickly.
Thank you, Katie for the wonderful signs you made for us to pop on our bins.
POPCORN/JELLY AND CUSTARD
Term 3 we will be serving Jelly cups $1:00 a cup along with our popcorn 50c.
Together we do great things.
Harlan, Henrietta and Blake
