Principal news

Our momentum has been slowed by a recent virus that has hit students, parents and staff. Let's hope the worst is gone as we head into finalising tasks and assessment.
Our P&C is seeking your help for the Toogoolawah Show and it was fitting that last week we recognised our many volunteers that give freely of their time. We certainly would not have the many resources and programs we offer without volunteer support and our P&C. Please give in any way you can and let's see more amazing things happening in our school.
Student entries for the Toogoolawah Show are due Tuesday. We will take home entries for you, as long as the entry form and entry fee are included. Don't forget our band students will be performing at 10.30 am near the wood chop area and thanks to Ms Graham for volunteering your time and leadership.
On Wednesday we all visit Wivenhoe Dam, a place of significance for residents of the Brisbane Valley. Students have studied both the geography and history of the dams. We have discussed the recreational and agricultural significance of the dams and employment opportunities they provide. A QParents permission form was sent on Tuesday with a note to advise the school if you are able to attend, if you are able to transport students or you need transportation for your child. We meet at Cormorant Bay at 9.30 am and the program will finish around 1.30 pm. The weather report looks promising this time.
Students have been sharpening their skills for the Athletics Carnival at Linville on Thursday 19 June. We hope you can join us for a great day of participation and school pride. We will be recording results for Roos and Dingoes.
The last week of this term will provide plenty of time to further develop riding skills, ready for the last day of the term ride from Toogoolawah to the Harlin siding. Students are asked to bring in their bikes on Monday, 23 June for riding practise on the oval and both breaks.
Our bike ride will also coincide with hand printing by students and the community, on an art mural which will then be placed on the side of the shed at the Harlin siding. This is an initiative of Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. There will be a sausage sizzle for lunch, thanks to our P&C.
All the best for a great weekend, perhaps by the fire.
Regards
Jo McCormick

Dear Families
As you may know, the local Toogoolawah Show is fast approaching on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th of June. We have been given the opportunity to run the Cattleman’s Canteen to raise funds for our school and students.
We are looking for your valuable support to enable a successful outcome!
We would love your help to assist in the canteen at the show on either Friday (between 5am-5pm) or Saturday (between 5am-12pm).
There is a roster in the office that you can put your name down, with times/jobs that need to be filled.
There is an entry fee that the show society requires of all volunteers - this form is also at the office.
All proceeds raised will go back into our school to assist with the cost of excursions, school camps, sporting activities and equipment, new school resources, permanent structures around the school and much more.
Your help at the show canteen for a few hours on either Friday or Saturday would be greatly appreciated.
Your support will not only benefit our students directly but also showcase the spirit of our school community
involvement and support for education. Let’s work together, have some fun and do this for our kids!
If you would like to contribute in any capacity or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Katie on
0404 581 026 as soon as possible.
Kind regards
Harlin State School P & C Assoc.
Volunteer Day - thank you!

Year P - 3 News

We have had an exciting week writing a procedure for a Mini Bow and Arrow. Mrs Mac's shot landed on the ceiling fan. However, several balloons have been burst! Next week we start on writing our own procedure with a Title, Materials, Equipment, Steps and a Glossary.
On Monday, we start the assessment of time in our maths. We then move on to more focus on number and algebra.
In Health we are discussing ways to remain healthy and look after our most important muscle, the heart. We have looked at sedentary behaviours and better choices to improve our health. Students are practising their arm wrestle technique as they vs. Mrs Mac for 'The Battle of the Guns!'
In HASS we have discussed how the first schools in the district were funded by parents, making do with the available materials to construct a rough bush hut with calico windows. No air-conditioning, iPads, carpet, materials and resources! Once the school maintained a number of children, an official teacher was sent into the fray. We saw photos of the original Harlin and Colinton schools.
Remember, reading folders. Every day of reading, is rewarded with a dojo!
Mrs Mac
Junior students have refined their science diagram techniques as well as investigating how to separate mixtures. Students used a colander, a sieve and paper towel to try to separate rice bubbles, cocoa, coconut and icing sugar. They made predictions and recorded their observations, taking into account the size of the substances and the size of the holes in the sifting tools.

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

Our Reading chart showing reading hours for May has Kacey in the lead with 18 hours! Peyton is next with 12 hours for the month. Keep those reading folders coming in every Monday so we can add more stickers to our chart!
4-6 Science
The Senior class has gone atomic in Science! Students have constructed a variety of molecules (water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, salt and vinegar) using different atoms. They have used their knowledge of molecules to describe reversible changes such as melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation and dissolving. This week students investigated how burning candles creates an irreversible change!

Our Maths focus at the moment is time. We have a 24-hour timeline to visualise how 12-hour time and 24-hour time are connected. Students have also been using number lines to calculate elapsed time.

Students have also used OneNote to record their Science learning, using a combination of typing, speech-to-text and drawing.

Music with Ms Graham

Students have been working hard during rehearsals and our performances are coming together nicely!
The Beginner students have been working hard! They are preparing Hot Cross Buns, for both the performance at the Toogoolawah Show and their assessment in Week 8. They are also preparing Raiders of the Lost Ark to perform with the combined primary schools of the Brisbane Valley. Harlan and Henrietta have jumped ahead and are preparing Incy Wincy Spider for their assessment.
The Continuing students are paving the way in band with Chilli Bean! They are being super supportive of our beginners and helping them with hard passages. Cleo, Eliza and Kacey are preparing Michael Finnegan for their assessment, while Blake is perfecting Amazing Grace and is about to start on the blue Tradition of Excellence book!
NOTE: There will be NO instrumental music in Week 7 (June 5) as Miss Graham will be on tour with the Toogoolawah State High School Concert Band.
REMINDER: Our performance at the Toogoolawah Show will be on June 7. Please meet at the stage (near the woodchopping area) at 10.15am sharp! We will be performing at 10.30am. Remember to wear your full school uniform, and bring your instrument and music.
Looking forward to seeing you there!

AND…...........
Looking for a few bales of Lucerne for our veggie garden please. Mrs Blackmore is getting it ready for our winter veggies.
We celebrated all our parents and amazing community members who help with our plant stall. With all the plants and pot donations we are able to sell such a wide variety of plants keeping our three stands looking full.
Student Council has donated pumpkins to help at this year's Toogoolawah show. We only have a few left and the vines have all finished producing.
Hubby is happy that I won’t be sending him down our hill to pick more.
