Principal news

We have had an exciting couple of weeks as we gather back our momentum ready for assessment in Week 9 & 10. Our Art works are looking professional, and the frames are sure to attract the judge's eye at the Toogoolawah Show. Thanks Mrs Guy. Grace and Rebecca from Parliamentary Education engaged our Yr. 4-6 students in a mock debate regarding a swimming pool on our school grounds. Oh, that would be fabulous. Here, here! If you have yet to see Deb Frecklington affirming our school and our senior leaders in Parliament, stay tuned as we aim to get a copy. Prep - 3 have observed rocks and various soils from the district and we have an aspiring fossicker digging for 'gold'!
In 2024 we had a School Review. The feedback was very positive and reflected the dedication of staff to essential and purposeful learning. It also highlighted the support of parents and the school community to ensure the best outcomes for students. It gave us some goals for the four years ahead. Our AIP (Annual Implementation Plan) and Strategic Plan have been co-constructed from the 2024 School Review. We have 2 goals from the Strategic Plan we are working on this year.
AIP 2025 Focus:
1. Implementing effective pedagogical practises (How can we teach better and more effectively for the diverse needs within our classroom?)
2. Leading systematic curriculum implementation (The CARF sets out our schedule for the year against the expectations of the Australian Curriculum)
2025-2028 Strategic Plan
School priority 1. Drive an explicit improvement agenda (raising our A-C data, helping every student achieve 95% or above attendance, collaborating with our school community to achieve our goals).
School priority 2. Implement effective pedagogical practises (a goal of our AIP - see above)
School priority 3. Lead systematic curriculum implementation (a goal of our AIP - see above)
Schoo priority 4. Build an expert teaching team (staff are constantly learning too. We need to get our heads around the new V9 curriculum, One School functionality and some of the latest research from experts).
Welcome to Mr Mat (yes, one t) who is working on a casual basis, thanks to extra funding received from DDSWR. Mathew is working with all of our students, either in the classroom or on the oval. Mat comes with experience of one-on-one support and a background in social skilling for students.
Ms Jennifer Kent visited us on Wednesday to discuss ides to revamp our indigenous art. Harlan represented students as our Indigenous Leader and Ash-Lee Thallon was our parent representative. There were some great ideas from our discussions and walk around the grounds. Jenny is a multicultural Australian with First Nations Ancestry from the Quandamooka, Jinibara, Wakkawakka Tribes of Southeast Queensland and of the Taroombal of the Central East Coast of Queensland. Jennifer is the lead artist of Manamana Dreaming (https://www.manamanadreaming.com/) The Harlin Community is invited to come and talk with Jenny on Friday, 30 May. Jenny will present ideas for consultation. A morning tea will be provided. If you know of any community members who may like to be involved, please let Mrs Thallon know so we can send an invitation. Jennifer is also painting the mural on the shed at the Harlin siding site of the BVRT. Students will be adding a handprint to the mural. Thanks to the BVRT for inviting us to be involved.
Easter eggs have been in the supermarkets for several weeks and that means our Easter Hat Parade is very soon! Parents, grandparents and helpers are invited to assist with Easter Hats on Friday 28 of March from 9-11 am. We will be well prepared for our Easter Hat gig and Parade at 9 am (not the usual 2.45 pm) on Friday 4 April. You can send along materials your child would like to use for making their Easter Hat, as soon as possible.
This week is Harmony Week, and we have discussed how we can make everyone in our school community feel that they belong at Harlin State School. Our school is lucky to have teenagers and seniors who add lots of opportunities for our students. We often learn to appreciate other cultures by tasting their food and learning their traditional dances. We hoped you enjoyed our Mexican Hat Dance. Most of us loved the nachos on Thursday.
Parent/student/teacher interviews begin in Week 9. We look forward to catching up with all parents to check in on the progress of your child in Term 1. You will receive a meeting schedule to return, and we provide one late session for our working parents. Harlin SS parents/carers have a 100 % uptake in our Term 1 invitations.
We look forward to Linville SS joining us for Cross Country on Thursday, 3 April. Age Champions 9-12 years will be decided between both schools. The House Shield will be fought out between the Roos and Dingoes. It is very important that all students are participating and supporting their house team. All students receive a point for participation as well as competition points. Dress in red for Roos and blue for Dingoes. Please join us and you may wish to bring a chair.
We are awaiting the first news of the playground finance being approved and some soil turning ASAP.
Year P-3 will be off to Wivenhoe Dam on Wednesday, 2 April. We meet at Cormorant Bay at 9.30 am and look forward to meeting Leonie from SEQ water who will share the history, construction and workings of the dam. This excursion will support our studies of the geography and landmarks of our region.
Please remember, reading each and every night and return readers for changing. I had our youngest student change his books twice this week! 'Today a reader, tomorrow a leader!'
How exciting to have tuckshop up and running again. Thanks to Kirralee and her helpers.
Have a great weekend.
Regards
Jo McCormick
Principal and Class teacher
Welcome, Mr Mathew Zenatti

Year 1- 3 News

It started with the spelling word 'coach!' We were trying to find rhyming words and Keegan said 'cockroach'. Mrs Mac said, "I know a song about a cockroach." So, we grabbed some maracas and found 'La Cucaracha' both in Spanish and English. We also discovered two stories where the cockroach lost a leg, and the other where it lost its dancing shoes. We danced madly, like a one-legged cockroach or a cockroach with dancing shoes!
From there, we thought that Mexico would be a great country to appreciate for Harmony Day. We looked at the world map, found Mexico and its flag, saw some fabulously large hats called 'sombreros' and then could not resist, "The Mexican Hat Dance". It was then 'Ariba, Ariba' as we learnt our left and right, and added a few fine moves. And, it's all history as we presented our dance on parade with our older friends.
Year 3 have been concentrating on how to add speech marks as part of punctuating their recounts. Our Big Bad Wolf changed this week, using a disguise! So, we wrote out the speech that the wolf used to try and trick Red Riding Hood as she stood beside her grandmother's bed. P-2 have finished recounts ready for assessment. They are working on high frequency words (HFW) and writing these with greater accuracy in their writing. We call these 'No Excuse' words. Our students are encouraged to make the effort to find words in our Thrass charts, on our Word Wall, in our readers and story books.
Mrs Guy spent last weekend cutting out the Zentangles ready for the frames I bought on the Coast. They look fabulous.
In Week 10, we head to Cormorant Bay at Wivenhoe Dam to meet Mrs Leonie May from SEQ Water. Leonie will touch on the history of the dam, its workings and students will test water. Parents and younger siblings are welcome. Please meet us at 9.30 am. We intend to be finished around 1 pm.
Adios Amigos!

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! Well … nearly. Our senior students are in full swing drafting their play scripts to show what they’ve learnt in English this term. It’s wonderful to see their enthusiasm for crafting their scripts. Next week, most students will be revising their work (often the hardest part of the process) before polishing and publishing for Week 10.
Our Science this last fortnight has focused on volcanoes as both destroyers and creators. Students have been practising notetaking by identifying key words in texts and writing dot-point notes. It was surprising to many students that volcanic eruptions can affect the weather, though the text we read wasn’t clear about whether the weather was affected in a positive way or a negative way.
Last Friday, students wrote SMART goals in preparation for Term 2 and we will send a copy of those home once they are printed. Encouragement from home will greatly assist in students achieving their chosen goals, so please keep an eye out for those goals coming home!
A reminder that reading folders are due on Mondays. Students receive a Harlin Hero for every 15 minutes of reading they do. Students can list the books they are reading and fill in the reading times. An adult squiggle on each entry is the only other requirement. I see about three folders a week. It would be fantastic to see more!
We have also been working hard on our cursive handwriting. Check out the focus!
In Maths, students are excited about data, if you can believe that? We have planned and conducted a survey with six questions relating to the Harlin Hero shop. Data has now been organised into tables. Our next step is creating data displays so we can interpret the results. It will be very interesting to see what comes from the students’ analysis.
Maths 4-6

We had a visit from the Parliamentary Education Office this week. The students engaged with gusto in the simulation of passing of a bill into law!

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing

Hi Harlin Family,
I hope you are all keeping well.
In this week’s newsletter I have attached a handout on Attachment Styles. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough space to fully cover attachment theory but I can provide a taster and if this wets your appetite to learn more or understand better or just have curious questions, contact me and we can either chat over the phone or meet in person when I come to Harlin school.
Like it or not, our childhood has to do with how we parent. In fact, attachment research has shown that our attachment style with our own parents is the biggest predictor of the attachment style we’ll have with our child.
In aiming to better understand our past, it’s helpful to explore what attachment style we may have had with our parents or other influential caretakers. Keep in mind that we can have different attachment styles with the different figures in our lives. As you become familiar with your attachment style, you may have insight into your relationships, past and present. The good news is once we have awareness, we have the power to change.
Please feel free to contact me on my work mobile number 0473 679 686 or email jbouc17@eq.edu.au

P & C NEWS
We were very excited to see some new faces at our first meeting of the year! Last year we proved that together we can do big things & I can’t wait to see what we can achieve this year for our little school.
A massive thank you & good luck to our outgoing president Angela Devlin for her many years of dedication to our P&C.
I would like to introduce our new team of executive members:
President- Katie Buckley
Vice President- Kelsey Daniels
Secretary- Emily Champ
Treasurer- Lisa Bechly
This year we have a strong vision with a focus on fundraising, chat with Katie if you have any great ideas or would like to lend a hand. Our first fundraiser for the year will be the Mother's Day stall 09.05.25.
We have reintroduced Tuckshop on Fridays with Kirralee & her little sidekick Colt in control. Many hands make light work, so let Kirralee know if you can spare a Friday here or there to help out. It would be greatly appreciated. There are some P&C Membership Forms in the office if you would like to join us. Memberships need to be renewed each year. Joining doesn’t mean you have to take on lots of work & you don’t need to attend every meeting! Once you’re a member I can share upcoming details to keep you in the loop!
Next meeting is on the 19.05.25 @ 3:15pm.
Thank you,
Emily - Secretary.
