Principal's Report
Dear School Community
As we wind down for the year it is amazing how much we have achieved not only academically, but also bringing the community into our school, participating in events and excursions, and supporting organisations. The variety on offer helps to assist all students find a topic of interest as we work towards equity and excellence in our curriculum. Academic growth remains our core business however our students have also excelled in Instrumental, Band and sporting achievements.
Our staff have provided an extensive array of opportunities this year. Their talent, dedication and willingness to go well beyond their duties makes Harlin SS unique. Our staff deserve a huge vote of thanks for the work, student support and care they have provided in 2024.
Many activities have been possible due to the support of our P & C and we thank them again for their financial support, tuckshop, and the odd jobs that have been completed.
Our community has provided support in the classroom, garden, crocheting Remembrance Day poppies, and helping with plant sales. Thanks again to Mrs Blackmore, the Toogoolawah Men's Shed and our circle of grandparents and notable seniors who have been able to visit our school or support from afar.
We farewell our Year 6 students this Thursday at the Graduation Dinner. There is always some sadness, but it is also an exciting new chapter for our very talented students to make a mark in their secondary school journey. Please join us on Friday for our last parade of the year with attendance awards, ringing of the final school bell by Year 6 students and an arch of honour for the Year 6 students as they leave primary school for their last time.
Our class compositions for 2024 will look different to this year as we plan for student needs, numbers and staff. Our first priority is to organise classes so maximum learning time can take place with available staffing. We will advise class combinations before school begins in 2024.
We are off to Camp Duckadang on Monday. The bus is leaving at 8am. Students need to be at school by 7.45 am. The bus is scheduled to return by 5pm. Free dress (sun safe). Wednesday is Movie Day at Toogoolawah. Full school uniform required. Please check your permission forms for requirements.
Thanks to the P&C, our Awards and Concert Evening begins at 5.30 pm with a sausage sizzle and drink. The official part of the evening will start at 6.30 pm.
20 parents are now receiving permission forms via the QParents app. This means no more paper permission forms, saving time, energy and resources. If you are having issues joining, please come and see me for assistance.
A school camp program is in its infancy. I am accepting parent input and then staff will organise the program which will provide varied experiences for our Year 3-6 students, with the option of a local camp for the whole school.
A reminder that our paper craft art work will be on display at The Condensery this Saturday, 9 December. The Community Celebration will include workshops with internationally renowned artist Hiromi Tango, local artists Makiko Ramsay and Jane Nicholson, as well as a free dumpling lunch catered by Asian Dumpling House Kilcoy. The Toogoolawah Christmas Carnival will start afterwards at 4pm.
Have a safe and happy Christmas, an enjoyable break, and I look forward to catching up with you again on Monday 22 January.
Regards.
Mrs Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.
Prep - 2 News - Mrs Packenham
The Prep-2 students have been working as hard as Santa’s elves around Christmas! They have been painting decorations, making Christmas cards, singing Christmas carols, putting up the Christmas tree, reading Christmas stories, writing letters to Santa and the list goes on! We have had a wonderful year of learning in the Prep-2 room so it has been lovely to end the year with fun activities and special events.
We have started sending home the students’ equipment and books. This year we are sending home all equipment including unused items. In most cases, unused items can still be used next year. Please see me if you have any questions about this.
The fabulous photos for this newsletter have been taken by Oscar and Alex as they purchased ‘Class Photographer’ vouchers from the Harlin Hero Shop.
Finally, I wish to thank all students, staff, families and wider members of our school community for another wonderful year! Have a very happy Christmas, stay safe and I look forward to seeing everyone in 2024!

Year 3-6 News - Ms Fisher
The end of 2023 has arrived!
Students in the senior classroom have continued their learning (with a bit of extra fun thrown in) up until the last. The Year 5s and 6s have continued their Maths studies by focusing on shapes. They’ve studied what it takes to make a net to construct 3D shapes – and also what doesn’t work when designing nets! Students were challenged to design a package to send two pyramids through the post. They have also measured angles using 180⁰ and 360⁰ protractors.
We also enjoyed hosting the Year 2s as part of their transition to Year 3 next year. They spent some time sorting their spelling words into alphabetical order in preparation for using dictionaries next year.
Students in 3-6 have been preparing for their class Christmas concert item – Aussie Jingle Bells – which is going to be a cracker!
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Christmas. I look forward to working with our returning students next year!

Instrumental - Mr Adam Smith
“What a huge band we had at Carols in the Park on Friday night and a sensational sound to go with. It was such a joy for me to conduct multiple bands joined in one big band doing carols that they have never even rehearsed together before. I love how confident all the players were playing with their friends and their new friends from other schools. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Harris for organizing the night and thank you to all the Mums and Dad’s and grandparents who came out to watch. It was so nice to finish such a big year with a community event that brought all our musicians together.”
