Principal's Report
Dear School Community
The strength, support and love shown amongst our school community in the last few weeks has been uplifting. It demonstrates the value of living within a small tight-knit community, especially when faced with a tragedy so close to home. The added support from the wider community and the call to action has been comforting. We again extend our deepest condolences to the Marshall family and all of our families who have been close friends of Reece and affected by his loss. The support and love will continue in many forms as we support Lisa, Dusty, Steele, Tilly and Lainey. Thank you to the closest supporters of the Marshall family for your communications and suggestions to help us make the best decisions.
Our new changes in regards to class compositions are encouraging. There is lots of great team work amongst staff and students as we build towards our processes and procedures becoming everyday routines
A huge thanks to Travis Enks, Andrew Gloag and Shannon Wegert for moving the bus shelter to our permaculture garden. Within minutes the shed was up and away into its new home. Mrs Philp still has a smile on her face. It is going to be such an asset for the gardening equipment. Thanks to Mrs Enks for her insider knowledge and ability to coordinate the guys to get the job done.
We have hit the ground running, with Science and English being the drivers for our first excursion to the Brisbane Planetarium and Botanic Gardens this Tuesday 6 February. Please check your QParents for details and permission. Thanks again to our P&C for assisting with $1000 towards the bus cost of $1,144.00 If you need help accessing QParents please ask and we can get you signed up to, one touch permission online.
Our School Review is in Week 6 of this term. Some of our School community members will be contacted for feedback to the review team. The team will be looking at 3 of 9 domains and assessing our performance. I look forward to the Review to celebrate our success and set goals for the next 4 years. Please see the Community Information in our newsletter.
Lovely to see parents and grandparents at our Year 6 Leaders badge presentation. Thanks again to Mrs Deb Frecklington, Member for Nananago, for presenting the badges to our School Captains, Indigenous Leader and House Captains. We look forward to great feats from our leaders and all of our Year 6 students in 2024.
Thanks for the great response to QParents. We have previously spent a considerable amount of time preparing and chasing permission forms. QParents has reduced this workload considerably and made your provision of permission so simple. Our process this year is the one QParents online form or one printed form. There will be one reminder only via SMS for both permission and payment. If you require assistance to sign up to QParents please see Mrs Enks.
It is imperative that absences are reported by parents or carers. This can also be done by QParents. Please help us by letting us know of an absence and the reason by 9 am. Thank you for notifying us in advance in some cases.
Please check your eligibility for the Student Broadband Initiative against the criteria included in our community notices. This is a Federal Government initiative of which you may be eligible.
Finally, congratulations to Brax, Bridi and Ollie who will represent Harlin State School in the Lockyer Zone Swimming Trials. This is our first event as part of the Lockyer Zone.
Regards and have a great weekend.
Mrs Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.

Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
Our English unit this term will focus on persuasive texts as we examine food packaging. We would love donations of any boxes or packets that would otherwise be thrown out. Nothing is off-limits – cereal and biscuits boxes and packets, frozen food cartons, dairy and drink containers – all donations appreciated.
Our Maths focus is currently on number. Younger students have been representing numbers to twenty while other students have been practising rainbow facts to enable efficient mental strategies in calculate bonds to 100. Students have enjoyed hands-on activities to build their skills.
In Science, we are studying Space and very much looking forward to our excursion to the Planetarium next week! This week Prep-2 students have investigated how the sun moves across the sky while 3-4 students have collected facts about the Sun. Several students were shocked to find out our Sun is a star!
During HASS, Prep-2 students have started learning about families and how another person’s family can look different to their own. Year 3-4 students are learning about the history and diversity of Australia’s First Peoples, and how to interpret information sources, including maps.
This week we started Media Arts and had fun testing out the app Freeform which we are using to create one type of digital poster. Throughout the term students will work in small groups to create a variety of digital posters and a persuasive ad. We look forward to sharing these artworks with you at the end of the term!

Year 3-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
Year 5 & 6 have chosen 'S M A R T' as their acronmym for our goals this year: S - successful M - motivated A - awsome R - reliable T - trustworthy! We have made a cracking start, although we have had some battles with fractions and decimals. However, most of our Year 5-6 students are on the ball and ready to learn. In English, students are starting to think about what persuasive techniques they will employ in their persuasive product advertising. A move to the language devices of the text to be included on the product package is the next goal. We aim to make a product package using digital technology. Finally, students will investigate ways to deliver their product advertising to an audience.
In Technolgies, we are investigating the invasive species 'Mother of Millions'. Using the data from our trials to kill this horrible weed, students will be creating an Excel spreadsheet. Mr Shane Lampard from the Somerset Regional Council is going to make a visit and answer some of our questions.
In Science it's all big, Big, BIG! The universe, black holes and spiral galaxies are leading us on an exciting adventure and we are ready for the Planetarium next week.
We have started golf and let's hope we have a future champion or maybe just the skills to relax on the weekend.
Parents, grandparents and community members are most welcome in our classrooms. We would love to have an adult to read with students each morning. Let me know if you would like to help out.

Music is looking exciting for 2024 at Harlin State School! Our units for each band will carry over Term 1 and Term 2.
Prep students will be learning to identify speaking and singing voices, and to improvise movement while playing a game.
Students in Year 1 and 2 will be learning to compose and perform rhythmic ostinatos. They will also learn to sing a well-known song independently, while keeping in time and staying in tune.
In Year 3 and 4, students will be learning to sing a melodic canon in a small group. They will also improvise 8 beats while using the pentatonic scale.
In Year 5 and 6, students are learning to compose an 8-beat melodic ostinato on the staff. They will then perform it, using appropriate dynamics and expression to communicate a mood. Students in these classes will also sing a known song in small groups.
Instrumental - Mr Adam Smith
“Our 2024 beginners started strong. Kacey was drumming out some amazing rhythms while Eliza, Cleo and Eithan are sounding good already. We have had some changes to our band line up and I can’t wait to hear our first song in concert. We have already started working on our band songs and our first band rehearsal will start in Week 5 including our beginners as well. Last year was so good for music at Harlin State school and this year is going to be just as exciting.”
