Principal's Report
Dear School Community
Next week we are half-way through Term 1. Students are busy engaging in unit assessments, starting to consolidate learning in various forms, making progress with routines, and being responsible for their learning. Staff are busy making learning positive, differentiated and structured.
We had a hot, but great day at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and the Mt Coo-tha Botanic Gardens. If you have not visited the gardens we can recommend a picnic in the very impressive grounds. Students were equally impressed with both venues. The excursion has created added interest in our science units. Again, the excellent behaviour of Harlin SS students was noted by the Botanic Gardens staff.
Unfortunately, we have had students with symptoms of a recent virus. Please take note of the Timeout Poster sent home today. Please be mindful when it comes to symptoms that are affecting children or families. For obvious symptoms - stay home. Siblings or family members unwell - make a considered judgment. Thanks for your vigilance.
Please note the QLD Health advice re: children at the Queens Park Nature Centre on Saturday, February 3. QLD. Health is very concerned about possible infection of Australian Bat Lyssavirus.
You will see an outline of our curriculum for Term 1 in your child's bag today. It is also included in our flyer section. This may assist you to discuss your child's learning. Year 3 and Year 5 parents will also receive parent/carer information in regards to NAPLAN testing in Week 8. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Staff will provide this term, a meeting time for discussion of your child's progress. This is a change from the usual Term 2 invitation with report cards. We feel that getting on top of any issues, helping you with ideas to progress your child's education and sharing each child's strengths and areas for improvement is best communicated early in the year. Please take up the opportunity so that you are not surprised by your child's Term 2 and Term 4 results.
Year 6 Leaders are off to the Grip Leadership Conference at Highfields on Thursday. Thanks to TSHS for use of their mini-bus. Please arrive at 7.30 am for departure. Students from TSS will be sharing our bus. We will arrive at the Highfields Cultural Centre with plenty of time to organise our registration. We will do a drop off at the Toogoolawah State School on our return. A SMS will be sent with an approximate time.
Congratulations on your uptake of QParents (25) and thank you for helping us to cut down on our administration and pay greater attention to organisation. We would kindly ask you to now use the student absence function. Some parents have mastered this already. A move away from paper permission forms and online absence notification is our focus for 2024, and ensures accuracy of notifications. Remember, we must have a reason for your child's absence.
We have a dates for Cluster sport. Cross Country qualifiers (after Harlin SS Cross Country) - TSHS Friday 19 April. Athletics qualifiers (after Harlin SS Athletics) - TSS June 20. Ball Games - TSS Aug. 9 (Year 3-6) Please look out for our school-based Sport House competitions in the next newsletter.
Have a great weekend.

Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
Science has been very exciting! After our trip to the Planetarium, students have been super-interested in what’s in our sky. Our 3/4s have been investigating how the Sun and Earth interact to make a days and years. P-2s are examining landscapes and drawing some wonderful pictures showing natural, managed and constructed features.
In Maths we are working on fluent recall of addition facts and also partitioning numbers. Our MAB blocks are getting a good workout as we investigate how numbers are put together and how we can rearrange them to make adding and subtracting easier. We will be working with number expanders and number lines next week to build on our understanding.
Thank you for your effort already this term with homework! We had almost every student return their homework and Library books last Monday! This week we included two extra homework sheets to complement our HASS and Health units. It will be greatly appreciated if parents could take the extra time to complete these sheets with their child/children and return with their regular homework on Monday. Parents, please remember to sign the reading log and sound/word sheets so that we know the homework was completed. Students only receive new reading books, sound/word sheets and Harlin Hero tokens if homework is signed.

Year 3-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
Year 5-6 are full blast at the moment! They are an organised and super efficient bunch, taking on lots of responsibilty for their learning.
Students will be deciding on their product and the packaging this week. We have begun to consider the language features required for the literacy element of product advertising. My suggestion was to think of a product we may be able to make and include in the packaging. Next week, we will start on using CANVA to create the packaging template.
In maths we move on to Measurement and Geometry. Year 5 will be applying transformation and mapping concepts. Year 6 will be locating ordered pairs and describing transformations.
Mrs Philp and myself are taking opportunties to listen to every child read, every day. We are very pleased with the progress in just a few weeks. Students have the opportunity to read every night, complete some general maths facts and practice times-tables. Dojos are given for every night read and maths completed.
Library borrowing is on a Monday. We are putting funds towards Kids Magazines, including National Geographic - Kids, K-Zone, Double Helix, Discovery Box and Teen Breathe. We are hoping this inspires some of our reluctant readers to experience the joy of reading.

“I wish people could hear how strong our 2024 beginners are. Eithan is making a monster sound on his Trumpet. Eliza and Cleo can already get their fingers to cover the Clarinet holes to make “Hot Cross Buns” and look out for Kacey. Kacey kind of blew my mind because she can play a Rock beat and a Disco beat already with a locked in tempo and mega confidence. A big welcome to Blake who brings a big Trumpet sound with him to our band. I think 2024 is going to be a great year for Instrumental. Get your forms back”

Harlin SS P&C
Our first meeting of the year was off to a strong start. It was great to see some new faces and get some fresh input. If you have been thinking about joining, please come along to our next meeting. Any new ideas for fundraising or feedback is appreciated.
We would like to recommence tuck-shop again on Fridays. To do so we are looking for someone to coordinate the roster each fortnight. Unfortunately, it is the students that miss out if we can’t find a volunteer.
To help make our excursions a little more affordable, the P&C have agreed to donate $1000 per term to subsidise bus hire.
Each year, the P&C cover the cost of one senior shirt per family for year 6 students. We will continue to do that this year and Thank you to Lisa Bechly for working so hard on finding the perfect company & design. We look forward to seeing the final product proudly being worn around by our seniors.
A very big thank you again to the Esk community op shop as we have been fortunate enough that this wonderful organisation has donated another $1000 this term to our P&C. Please show your appreciation & support them in return if you get the opportunity to either buy or donate, even just pop in and say thank you on behalf of the school.
‘Our next meeting is our AGM on Wednesday March 6th. If you can help by filling a position in our P&C please come along.’
