Principal's Report
Dear School Community
I was very proud of our students at our Anzac Day commemoration and equally proud of our representation at the Toogoolawah Cenotaph. Many of our parents, grandparents and students made the effort to attend services in surrounding towns. It is heart-warming to see our school community instilling in the next generation the importance of remembrance.
Term 2 is action-packed with many activities to encourage investigation, comprehension, discussion and excitement in the joy of learning.
There are several excursions for which you will have or will soon receive a QParents notification. Thank you for your prompt responses to the requests. Payments for excursions do not show immediately. We have a pay by date to ensure we have an accurate record of students who will be attending and can then make other arrangements for students if necessary. Thank you to parents who make prompt payments to streamline this process. We would prefer not to send reminders.
You will find the Term 2 Curriculum Overview in the newsletter. It was lovely to hear a parent talk about finding this a useful document to engage with her children, in regards to their learning. Often, students respond to the question, "What did you learn today?" with "Nothing!" I can assure you there is a tremendous amount of learning going on. Hoping the overview helps you with some prompts for discussion and it can also be downloaded.
There is great excitement for this coming Monday and our trip to Australia Zoo. Due to the cost, we make it a full day of fun and learning. The bus leaves at 8 am. giving us time on arrival for the bathroom, a snack and a safety orientation. Our official day then starts promptly at 10 am. Please ensure your child/children are at school by 7.45 am. Mrs Packenham conducted a wonderful investigation today in our PBL lesson for the next fortnight, focussing on how students can be a role model at school and within the community. There was particular attention paid to our conduct at Australia Zoo.
Mrs Blackmore, Mrs Wendt and Mrs Blacklock are very busy sharing their skills of needlework and jam making with our students in readiness for Mothers' Day. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Nerida, Karen and Carol for sharing their skills. Mrs Wendt is keen to share her knitting and crochet skills as soon as students have completed the needlework tasks.
Thank you for using QParents for absences. Please remember a reason for absence is required.
I would like to acknowledge Mrs Philp and the 2023 Student Council. They have left a wonderful legacy with the installation of a water cooler. It is much appreciated and enjoyed by the whole school community.
Please see the Time Out poster that is a useful document to use for childhood illness. Whilst we want to increase our attendance, it is also important for students to come to school healthy, well rested and ready for a full day of learning. Protecting the health of the whole school community is paramount.
Mr Bruce McDade and his wife Cheryl are moving on to a new part of their life in Burpengary. We thank them both for their support of Harlin State School. Bruce has taught guitar for 10 years at Harlin. He intends to make a visit now and then to help our guitarists continue their skills. We celebrated Bruce's involvement in our school today after parade with an afternoon tea.
We welcome back Mrs Carol and Ms Hilary Benson. Mrs Carol will be working in both classes. Mrs Benson will assist across the school with a focus on the library, technology and support in the classroom when required.
Mrs Jill Boucher is the Brisbane Valley Well-being Professional and has started the role this term. Jill will be available once a month to assist our students, with a focus on facilitating successful learning outcomes through the relief of distress, removal of barriers, and further suggestions for the development of safe and inclusive practices.
Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher will be participating in a Reading Masterclass on Tuesday May 7th. Both myself and Ms Fisher have completed an online Science of Language and Reading course through Latrobe University over 4 evenings. Our AIP continues to focus on the latest research and understanding of how best to support the teaching of reading in our school.
Mrs Deb Frecklington aims to visit Year 5-6 to talk about the 3 Levels of Government as part of our HASS Unit, on Tuesday 14 May.
I will be in Toowoomba on Tuesday 14 & 15 May for an Equity and Excellence Roadshow with our Director General, Regional Director, School Supervisors and Colleagues.
Thank you once again to our P&C who have supported the Australia Zoo excursion with a $1000 towards the cost of the bus. The cost of the excursion is subsidised by the work of P&C volunteers. Without this support the cost of the excursion would be $57 in comparison to a subsidised $22.50. We received 20 Ukuleles also funded by our P&C. Ms Graham looks forward to teaching the associated skills and staff and students are most grateful.
As the weather is now becoming cooler please see images of the school winter uniform as a reminder of our school expectation. This is part of our school uniform policy and made in consultation with our P&C.
An information sheet will be sent home in regards to Pet Day on the 29 May. Thanks to Hayley Eldridge who will be our judge for various categories. A list of requirements will be sent home to ensure the safety of both children and animals!
Have a great weekend.
Mrs Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.
Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
English/Science
We are embarking on a biology unit in Science this term, which is very exciting because it links to the information texts we will be studying in our English unit. Students will read texts about lots of different animals and plants then creating their own information text in the form of a triorama. It promises to be really interesting and lots of fun! In handwriting, Year 3s and 4s have started looking at entries and exits as part of their cursive handwriting journey. Despite the prevalence of electronic devices, handwriting is still an important skill. Evidence shows that students retain more of what they learn when they write by hand, versus that which is typed.
Maths
3s and 4s have been working on their symmetry unit. We kicked off our unit drawing symmetrical bugs! Since then, Year 4s have created designs with rotational symmetry while Year 3s have been taking photos of line symmetry in the school.
Technology
Prep - 2 are learning to use their log on and password to access Code.org. They are then coding with Rodocodo!
Year 3 & 4 manipulated a Power-point to complete a data display. They have used Excel to represent 2 weeks of our rubbish collection from last term.

Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
Students are excited to once again engage with CANVA to create a webpage for English. The focus is on language and text features of an information report, based on a chosen animal.
We move from weeds to Maronghi Creek to observe and record the health of the creek. Mrs Leoni Mae, Seqwater Education, conducted a virtual lesson and instructed students on how to test the water for oxygen, phosphorus and temperature. Students will collect data on aquatic lifeforms to also assess the water quality. Parents/grandparents are invited to venture with the 'Curious Creek Critters’ down to the creek on Tuesdays at 2 pm.

There is no stopping our beginners. They just learned a new piece of band music using the notes they have learned so far and are sounding great at it. Also, our beginners are officially in the Concert Band which rehearses from 2:45-3:15pm every Tuesday. Stay tuned for our upcoming performances this term. I am loving the powerful sound of our band and the high energy level in performance.

Somerset Rail Trail Classic - free entry for our first 10 students
Free entry ticket offer – 21st annual Somerset Rail Trail Classic
The annual Somerset Rail Trail Classic is back!
An initiative of the Somerset Regional Council, this event takes place on Australia’s longest recreational rail trail on Sunday, 21 July 2024. The event is about sharing an active and healthy lifestyle with family and friends and enjoying the best the Somerset region has to offer. This year, the SRTC is supporting the Fernvale and Lowood Lions Clubs as the 2024 event beneficiaries.
With the support of our generous sponsors, including A&M Civil Contracting, we are pleased to be able to offer your students 10 free entries to this exciting event. This could be the perfect opportunity to encourage reluctant or budding sports heroes or as a prize in an active and healthy school competition. How your school wishes to distribute the vouchers to your students is up to you.
To take advantage of this offer, each of your 10 participants would simply need to register via our online portal and enter their school discount HAR24. Students can choose to take part in either the 8km or 3km run / walk events or a 44km bike ride along the trail to the festivities at the Fernvale Sports Park.
Please note, children under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
