Principal's Report
Harlin SS has had an exciting start to term 3 with our bike ride from Benarkin to Linville, Kops in Kilts for our community and the excursion to the Rail Workshops Museum.
Year 3-6 are full steam ahead with 'Tracks, Trays and Trucks', a combined unit targeting the interests of our students and local experts. Assessment tasks will be conducted thoughout the remainder of this term.
Prep-2 are very busy comparing stories, investigating their 'Changing World', 'Movement' and all about growth in plants and animals. We are looking forward to Mr Arnold Glover helping us hatch chicks.
Congratulations to Calarni, Tijana, Adelaide, Steele, Brax, Reece, Bridi and Hayley for respresenting Harlin SS at the District Athletics in Nanango. Thanks also to parents who provided transport and support. Congratulations Brax, on qualifying for the Regional Team in discus.
Thank you to Ms Fisher and Mrs Packenham for providing Parent/Teacher/Student interviews times to suit working parents. It is imperative that you are well versed on your child's progress, as we are now only 6 weeks to the end of term 3. Results should not come as a suprise and I urge parents who did not attend these meetings, to ensure they are in contact with our staff on student progress.
Mr Dennison and Mrs Mac are busy teaching bush dances to all students. This is in preparation for the Community Bush Dance on Thursday 31 August from 5.30 - 8 pm, with a supper to finish the evening. The following day is the Pupil Free Day where staff will be recieving first aid training, participating in moderation of assesssment tasks, and preparing for the end of term.
Currently, we have a vacancy for a permanant positon as cleaner This vacancy closes on August 2.

The School Opinion Survey is open and I would be grateful for feedback by the close, on Friday 18 August. There is always room for improvement in any organisation and the SOS can provide some insights for the whole school community.
Please check our Year 6 Graduation and other date claimers for the end of the year.
Feedback on the engagement and manners from our visitors to our Kops in Kilts and from the Railway museum staff was extremely pleasing. It makes the extra effort our staff commit to after-hours and over the holidays worth it! Well done parents and students.
Yours sincerely
Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.

Prep - 2 News Mrs Packenham
Learning is full steam ahead in the Prep-2 room! Here is an overview of our learning for this term:
- In English, students are comparing imaginative and informative texts. Prep students will be expressing their likes and dislikes for aspects of texts and retelling a story. The Year 1 and 2 students will be writing about their preference for a particular text.
- In Mathematics, students have been learning to skip count in 2s, 5s and 10s, and work with 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. We have had some tremendous improvement in Mathematics understanding already this term! Soon we will explore measurement and shape concepts.
- In Science, students are learning about how and why objects move, and how light and sound are created and how they can be changed.
- In HASS, students are learning about maps and the features of local places.
- We are also learning Drama this term and will be representing local places through Drama activities.
Earlier this term I completed training in the ‘Rhythm and Movement for Self-Regulation’ program, produced by Queensland University of Technology. This program involves musical activities that are specifically designed to improve and help students develop self-regulation and executive functioning skills. We are including this program in our afternoon sessions to assist students in regulating their emotions and calm their bodies.
We all enjoyed Nate’s show and tell last week! Nate purchased a ‘Show and Tell’ voucher from the Harlin Hero Shop at the end of last term and used it last week to show his walkie talkies! We have been learning about sound sources so this show and tell fitted in perfectly with our Science unit. Thanks for sharing, Nate!
Students have been practising their spelling words by constructing their own letters. This task was tricky at first, but is now easy!
Year 3-6 News - Ms Fisher
Senior students are busy creating 7 'artefacts' or tasks for our combined unit of "Tracks, Trucks and Trays'. All things 'energy' have resulted in balloon cars and solar powered toys. Mrs Karreman is keeping students busy on google earth, calculating the changes in the local quarry size. Mrs Mac has students thinking about a sustainable vehicle that serves a social purpose and has introduced Tinkercad to bring the design to a 3 D model. Reading every night is still an expectation and we hope more students can remember to bring in their reading log every Friday. Year 3 & 4 have started 'Kicking it Maths' which has a focus on number facts. Students can progress at anytime and we have tables games for home. We are looking forward to Mr Smith and Mr Karreman talking to us next week and have developed a series of interesting questions.
Instrumental - Mr Adam Smith
Our band have received the music for two Christmas carols, “Silent Night” and “Little Drummer Boy”. Half of our band can play these songs already. We have also begun work on a brand new song called "Marching Drum” which makes 6 songs in our repertoire plus some students are working on “Advance Australia Fair”. That’s not even counting our curriculum text work as well as technical work. Sommer is playing lovely strong C’s, D’s and E’s on her Clarinet and I noticed that she is reading the band music and working out new notes without needing any help. Well done Sommer.
Makiko Art Workshop
Makiko (Maki) visited on Friday, promoting the Hiromo Tango project to be exhibited at 9 December - 18 February at the Condensory. Students used recycled fabric to decorate a wooden horse and some stayed during the break to make paper flowers. The student sculpture will also be on display at the exhibition.

Student Council News Term 3 Week 3
Hope everyone had a great break.
CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
We have a couple of families in Moore and Linville who have
kindly offered their containers. Mrs Philp will pick them up
when she can steal her hubby’s ute. Thank you again to the
families who are bringing in their spare containers. They sure add up.
PLANT STALL
We were able to raise another $235.00 over the holidays. Garden Club is every Tuesday so if you have any cuttings or plants we can split up please bring them in on Monday or Tuesday so the students can get potting ready for spring.
VEGETABLE GARDEN
The veggies are growing beautifully. It will be great when
we can start using them to cook in our new shed when
it comes. At the moment we are selling the produce so
we will have some money for the seeds when the time
comes. Bok Choy 3 for $2 Bunch of Silver Beet $2.
We still need
- A rotary hoe to dig up the main veggie patch.
- Manure for the compost heaps.
- Mulch hay.
FUN DAY
This will be decided at the next meeting.

Benarkin to Linville Bike Ride
This was a huge undertaking by Linville SS and we want to thank Mrs Dean for her organisation. I was pleased to hear the event was again a great day with fantastic weather. Thanks to non-riders who worked with Mrs Packenham at Linville SS for the day. We will be reviewing this learning day for 2024. PBL Focus Week 4 & 5
Our fortnight focus is 'I am respectful by accepting others' differences'. Today, we had a group discussion on how social media tells us to be 'perfect' yet none of us are perfect. Some children demonstrated 'body language clues' and we noted how we need to read these some times and give space or check in. We talked about how genetic disorders make people different but they still need acceptance, and can still achieve. Bluey talked about teasing and we discussed in small groups the fine line between playing a joke and teasing.
- * I talk nicely to other people
- * I include other people in my group or activity
- *I try to understand how another person thinks and feels.
- *I respect that other people are different.
- *I understand that everyone wants to feel like they are accepted.
- *I make people feel comfortable around me.
- *I stand up for others
