Principal's Report
This week we celebrate 'Volunteers' and today is 'P&C Day!' We are blessed with wonderful parents/carers and community members who make many of the activities, experiences and equipment possible at our school. Our school volunteers are also on the local fire brigade, the tennis club, coach kids sport, help with Meals on Wheels, work a shift at the Toogoolawah Red Cross or make plant stands at the Men’s Shed! Over 5 million 'busy' people are giving up their time to volunteer in Australia. Thank you, Volunteers.
What a wonderful array of mammals and reptiles that visited our school last week to further engage our students in the study of animals! Thank you, to the Somerset Council who engaged Martin to visit schools in the region. And, what great timing! Our kids are so in to animals at present. Kacey, with an 'eagle eye' has spotted an owl that we have now claimed as our very own. Check with Kacey on its whereabouts.
The Principal Roadshow discussed many issues facing schools in QLD including the work-life balance of staff, equitable funding, a pedagogical framework (how we teach), the teacher shortage, and how the Department can work to assist us in our varying capacities and environments. The Department is very keen to work for equity and excellence in all facets of education. We talk constantly as a staff on how we can differentiate our daily teaching to be as equitable and therefore, excellent. On Thursday, our School Supervisor, Jonathon Druce, visited. He was very impressed with the feedback students gave about their learning and the way in which they can improve.
This term is alive with more interesting and engaging activities to excite our learners. Incorporating our science and english theme of 'animals' we have our Pet Day next Wednesday. I am looking forward to meeting more members of your family. Students will be attending the Toogoolawah Show on the afternoon of Friday 7 June from 12 - 3pm. We will have the opportunity to see domestic and farm animals at their best and also support this community festival that has been a highlight of the area since 1913. There is also an opportunity for our transition students to see the Agricultural team from TSHS in action. Parents and grandparents are welcome to help us with supervision.
Our focus on reading improvement is supported with Readers Cup for selected students at Fernvale SS. The focus switches to 'The Arts' with a pantomime at The Ipswich Little Theatre for Prep-2.
Students have been practising athletics and ball games in PE and on Friday afternoon. Dingoes and the Roos go head-to-head on Thursday 13 June. Bring a chair and remember to dress in blue for Dingoes or red for Roos. To ensure a dry track for high jump, 10-12 years will compete on Monday, 10 June from 1.15 pm. The 800 m. will be run on Tuesday, 11 June from 2.30 pm. We are hoping for great weather. Qualifiers will head to Toogoolawah State School on Thursday 20 June.
Please check the calendar so you can join in our activities.
Assessment has begun and let's hope we can all remain well in the season of colds and flu. Remember, students need to be well rested and eating lots of brain food to be doing their best.
Ball Games practise starts next week. The team is open to Year 3-6. There needs to be a commitment to lunchtime training organised by our House Captains. Students sign up on the sheet in the undercover area. The teams will compete at TSS in Week 7 of Term 3.
Welcome, Mrs Cassy Guy to our team. Cassy has worked previously as a teacher aide at Kilcoy SS and we look forward to Cassy sharing her skills and talents at Harlin SS.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.
Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
In English, students are working on their information texts about echidnas and platypuses. P-2 have been investigating noun groups for their text while 3s and 4s have been highlighting keywords in text, writing dot point notes and then creating sentences from their notes. We’re really excited to see how out tri-oramas will turn out!
Our focus in Maths at the moment is on number patterns and time. P-2 have created some wonderful growing and repeating patterns! 3s and 4s have made their own analogue clocks and have also been working with a 24hr timeline to help them tell the time and also calculate durations of time.
Science is very cool at the moment. We have some additional members of our class: caterpillars Karma, Missus and Scratchy, along with Brutus and Prickles (currently in chrysalises). Bella and Eliza are caring for our critters and we’re hoping to have some butterflies soon!

Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
In maths, students are investigating probability as a fraction, how the composition of the dart board relates to probability, comparing and graphing frequencies and identifying possible outcomes.
In English, students are planning their informative report and how this will be presented on a webpage. We have had lots of opportunities to "Bump up" initial texts to create more precise sentences and paragraphs. Sometimes, it is important to recognise where less words can make the information more effective. Students have been working on note-taking to create 9 sub-headings for their informative report.
Our last visit to Maronghi Creek will allow us to finish an Excel spreadsheet and create a informative summary of dat from both the weed eradication and water quality investigations.
In HASS, students are studying how Parliament makes laws, the role of the House of Representatives and The Senate. Students discovered the stages of a Bill and will role-play a Bill that aims to limit the time children spend on media!
We will be modelling our chosen animal for display at the Toogoolawah Show.
Assessment will be conducted from now until the end of term.

Get ready for assessment time. This term we are doing our Curriculum level scale and arpeggio and solo piece for our assessment video. Our beginners are doing great work on our new band songs, learning new notes and rhythms. Band is sounding great together.
Our band is performing at the Toogoolawah Show on Saturday June 8 at 10:30am. We will play our two songs, “Good Time Truckin’”, and “Boogie Dance” together with Linville SS and Toogoolawah SS at the stage area near the woodchops. This will be a huge band. Don’t miss it. We are also performing at Seniors Day at school in Week 1 next term.
