Principal's Report
Harlin students are as 'Busy as Bees' for the countdown to the end of term 2. We have assessment continuing into next week. Students entered into the Toogoolawah Show competitions and we looked for them today on our excursion. Next week, we have Readers Cup at Fernvale SS and 'Picnic in The Woods' at Ipswich and we start our tie dye, ready to celebrate NAIDOC Day in Week 10. We are hoping for great weather for our High Jump on Monday, 800m on Tuesday and Athletics on Thursday. WOW! We will need a holiday.
Pet Day was fabulous. Thanks to parents and grandparents for your support. From a horse, to chooks, a blue tongue lizard, dogs, cats, and birds, we certainly had a variety, and incredibly well-behaved animals. Thanks to Hayley for her help with prizes for our menagerie!
How exciting to be successful with the grant of $360, 400 for our new playground. Sometimes, we can be deflated by constant applications for these big-ticket items that do not come to fruition after a considerable amount of effort. Finally, our resilience has paid off. I look forward to collaboration within our school community, to achieve the best possible playground from the money available.
Our Year 6 students were impressed with the first Toogoolawah State High School Transition session. They really enjoyed the activities and were most impressed with their prizes. Thanks again to Mr Jardine and his Team for their considered planning and organisation.
A big thanks, in advance to Mr Smith for his personal time dedicated to the band tomorrow. If you are able to visit the Toogoolawah Show, please make time to see our instrumental students from 10.30 am near the woodchop arena.
Best of luck to our Readers Cup Team who will be competing under the guidance of Ms Fisher, this Wednesday at Fernvale. The state wide competition is an initiative of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Qld branch, designed to encourage students who enjoy reading, to work together as a team and then to compete in a quiz style competition. This is another avenue for promoting our reading goals.
Prep - 2 will be delighted with the 'Picnic in The Woods' performance at the Little Theatre, Ipswich, also on Wednesday. Mrs Packenham and Mrs Enks will then lead our little ones to the Queens Park Nature Centre and The Japanese Gardens. Again, our dedicated staff provide opportunities for engagement in literacy, promotion of language and a reminder of all things wonderful about animals.
The Men's Shed will be delivering a 'Little Library' for our school and community next week. Mr Dave Blackmore has constructed the stand. We look forward to providing more reading opportunities for not only our students but also for those passing by. Thanks to the Men’s Shed and Mr Dave Blackmore for helping us to promote reading.
The Student Council Pyjama Day was a hit! It was a very relaxed group of students within our classrooms on Wednesday. If only we could wear warm slippers every day!
Lovely to see lots of maroon on Queensland Day. The win by QLD. in the NRL was an added bonus to celebrate all that is great about the' Sunshine State’.
We have had some success with our entries in the various competitions at the Toogoolawah Show. Thanks to staff, parents and our community volunteers for assistance with entries, and helping today with transportation and supervision. A note was emailed re: Can and Bottle Collection at the Show tomorrow and Sunday. Let's see how our collection transfers to $ and if this is a fundraising opportunity for the future.
Year 5 and 6 parents will receive a letter in regards to the camp in Term 4. Please return your feedback as soon as possible. Our camp program has a 2-year cycle of local and regional venues. Costs of a camp have increased dramatically and we are looking for opportunities for parents to decrease costs and allow every student to attend.
Don't forget the P&C meeting this Wednesday at 3.30 pm in the library. You are welcome.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.

Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
In English we are working hard on our tri-aramas! P-2 are writing an information text about frogs while 3-4s are writing about platypuses. Students are doing a great job constructing their texts. In our spelling work, we have been learning how to use the adjectives ‘this, that, these, those’ when identifying nouns. We have also tried to sort out how to use ‘than’ and ‘then’. It takes practice to use these tricky words but our students are endeavouring to speak and write correctly.
Our 3-4s have finished their Maths unit on Time and are moving onto number patterns. Year 3s are combining addition and subtraction in patterns while Year 4s wrestle with multiplication patterns. P-2 have wrapped up their patterning work and are moving to Time now.
Our Science unit on living things is almost finished. Investigating the needs of living things, and how we classify them, has been lots of fun. We are wondering if there are any little ‘Steve Irwins’ in our room?
Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
Year 5-6 are hard at work completing assessment and deadlines. They are definitely requiring lots of resilience and have lots of opportunities to take risks with their learning. We need to finish our English, HASS, Reading and Technologies, so there will be some very busy senior students. Year 5 students will also complete a maths assessment.
Students did a great job of finishing their clay animals for our HSS Show exhibit. These are animals they had chosen for their information reports.
Lovely to hear great feedback about our Senior students and their manners and cooperation. Nearly all Year 6 students have been presented with their Student Council badges. The students are busy with plants, popcorn and jelly, cans and bottles, gardening and special days. These fundraising opportunties only work when all students work as a team. It is impressive to see a greater appreciation of each other's strengths and the realisation that not all jobs are enjoyable!
A huge week ahead!

NAIDOC Celebration Dr. Beth Tailby
On Wednesday, 19th June, Toogoolawah SS, Harlin SS and Linville SS will proudly celebrate NAIDOC week. The event is hosted by Toogoolawah SS where students will have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:
- T-shirt printing
- Bull roarers
- Head bands and decorating (thanks to Harlin SS)
- Kangaroo stew (the kids loved this last year)
- Intergenerational Play Group
- Displays from health organisations
- Police Liaison Officers
- Sausage sizzle (huge thanks to Brisbane Valley Meats who have donated each year 300 or more sausages)
- Qld Ballet will also be piloting a project workshop with our schools. This workshop will be sharing stories from Max Dillon (Kuombumerri Man) with the children who will then interpret this into a performance.
It is so exciting to again be a part of this celebration.
Students can take home a printed shirt proudly donning the artwork of Nukara Nicholls. Nukara is a remarkable and famous artist who now has generously created a custom made stamp with her art, to share with our beautiful students.

Beth Tailby (AKA Dr.T)

Student Council Badge Presentation
Student Council members were presented with badges on Friday, 31 May. Although the presentation has been delayed, it allowed for members to iron out some issues with starting and completing tasks, taking reponsibility for their rostered tasks, and completing the not so glamourous jobs. Senior students are now on track and with a few reminders, are now thinking about what has to be done and by whom. They are starting to gel as a team and are working on providing more opportunities for all students. The 2024 Student Council members will leave a legacy for years to come. (Bridi was absent. We will present Bridi's badge in Week 9 at Parade)
