Principal Report
Term 3 is a busy term as we start to cement learning in everyday activities and build on skills of term 1 and 2.
On Wednesday we saw great teamwork from staff, parents and students to create a very successful day on the rail trail and time for one-on-one learning at school. We need to appreciate the months of planning, the office work required, and organisation that went into both the bike ride and providing meaningful learning back at school with Ms Fisher. Our morning started at 7.30 am with the Bechly family loading bikes, fruit, water, first-aid and helmets. It was then up to Benarkin with Mrs Mac, Mrs Packenham and Mrs Philp providing private transport. We met excited students and confident parents and Rob Clarkson was ready in his support vehicle. The Police Bike Squad and the Rural Fire Brigade breathed confidence into the peloton. The trail provided challenges for our older students but a safe passage for our youngest riders. Thanks again to Linville SS for keeping this event alive and providing a tasty lunch at the end of the ride. Parents assisted riders along the way and if you did not ride, please think about coming along next year. Not surprisingly, students were back on bikes until we headed home.
Last week, we had another early start for our Seniors/Grandparents Day. We were lucky with the weather and were delighted with our instrumental band, the QLD Police Pipes and Drums Band and the 'cool' vehicles provided by the Caboolture Car Club. Thanks to Leisa and Rick who jumped in to help on the barbeque.
Our annual bush dance will be in Week 9. As we have previous skills this will be part of our PE lessons starting in week 6. Look out for an invite to our Ten-pin Bowl session where you can show your prowess against our class teams.
Our P&C is working very hard to provide an affordable camp cost for Year 5& 6. They have some exciting news, so please look out for the Yr. 5-6 parent letter.
You will receive a request for an updated Facebook Page. Staff will now be able to use the school mobile phone to upload "learning" happening daily. We will also use the page for messages and reminders.
Mrs Blackmore has offered to take entries for the Kilcoy Show, due next Thursday. Students had great success at Toogoolawah. If your children would like to enter please check the schedule and have entries in on Thursday 26th July by 9 am. Thank you, Mrs Blackmore for providing more and varied opportunities for our students. https://www.kilcoyshow.com.au/schedule
Harlin SS took out the aggregate trophy at today's Brisbane Valley Cluster Athletics carnival. Our students were very impressive, heading straight into an 800m and then competing for a whole day of field and track events. Thanks to Toogoolawah SS for hosting the event, their great organisation and providing tuckshop.
Please take the time to ensure you read the permission forms and notes in regards to school events. This will help to make organisation easier for us all.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.
Congratulations Dr T

In-School Workshops: Kombumerri Dreaming Stories. We are now offering two new workshops created in collaboration with Dr Beth Tailby, a Kamilaroi woman and Auslan Languages teacher from Toogoolawah State School and surrounding schools. Dr Tailby and our Community and Education team spent time with Kombumerri Traditional Custodian, Uncle Max Dillon, to hear Dreaming stories and learn language, and permission was granted for these stories to become the stimulus for our new Prep – year 6 workshops. We thank Uncle Max and Dr Tailby for their time and friendship, and for sharing their stories, culture and expertise.
Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
The P-4 class is off and running for Term 3!
We are reading The Twits in English this term, and we’ve already figured out that Mr and Mrs Twit are not very nice people. They play horrible tricks on each other! Year 2s, 3s and 4s will be writing their own chapter for the book and it will be interesting (or terrifying!) to see what pranks they come up with.
In Science we are investigating the physical world by exploring the movement of objects; how to manipulate sound and light; and examining the behaviour of heat. P-2 used their senses last week to describe unpopped popcorn compared to popped popcorn. The magnifying glasses were a big hit! 3s and 4s watched a video showing the use of a thermal camera which has generated some great questions to explore about heat.
In Maths, Prep-2s have been consolidating time concepts, practising counting strategies and identifying numbers before and after. Our focus in Years 3 and 4 is on the link between addition and subtraction, as well as multiplication and division, and using these operations to solve problems.
All P-4 students have started learning about maps in HASS. Prep-2s have explored the difference between a side view and an aerial view, and had a go at drawing a map of a special place. Years 3 and 4 viewed a range of different atlases and learned how to find a specific place. We discussed the difference between a country and a continent, and labelled continents on a world map.
Last Thursday, we celebrated 100 days of learning. Students enjoyed a number of activities around the number 100 for the day. Check out the photos of our fun!
Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
Senior students have multiple sport and curriculum activities this term.
In English, we are preparing to write a chapter containing a horrid prank between Mr and Mrs Twit. Our focus has been on extended noun groups to create a vivid picture of not only the characters, but the disgusting prank. Watch out at home if your spaghetti is moving!
HASS is all about discovering our connections with Asia and the cultural and economic advantages with our near neighbour. We will use this connection to then explain how resources can be used to benefit individuals, the community and the environment. So far, we have investigated human and environmental diversity, and latitude and longitude. Students have identified the location of places and then discussed how this location would affect human and environmental diversity.
In Maths, both classes are into methods to record and represent data. Using 2-way tables, students have chosen the best graph to represent this data, both in their workbooks and using Make-a -graph. Students are learning to make statements about the data represented in various graphs.
Students have been busy practising for the Athletics which were conducted today. We will then swing our focus back to Ball Games. Giving up play time to work for the team is a sacrifice and one that shows the level of dedication of students to put the team first.
Next week we have our 3rd lesson of Ten Pin Bowling using the Roll 'n Strike Program. As with most sports, there are lots of techniques to learn.
Special mention to Harlan this week. Even though not selected for the athletics team, he came down each day to help out and support without being asked. Nice work, Harlan!

Term 3 Curriculum Overview
Social Worker - Jill Boucher
Hi Harlin school community
I am Jill the wellbeing social worker & I visit Harlin School once a fortnight on a Thursday. In this edition of the newsletter, I am promoting the development of social- emotional skills.
Did you know children with healthy social-emotional skills are more likely succeed in school, work, and life?
Healthy social-emotional skills help us:
Make friends and keep friendships. Gain confidence. Resolve conflicts. Manage stress and anxiety. Learn social norms. Make appropriate decisions. Resist negative social pressure. Learn strengths and weaknesses. Gain awareness of what others are feeling.
HOW do we develop healthy social emotional skills? Check out the 12 home activities that help build healthy social emotional skills. I hope this is helpful and let me know how you go.
Cheers Jill

“Congrats to the band for another fearless performance at Seniors Day. What a lovely event. I really enjoyed the feel of the day. Thanks to all the organizers for putting together such a nice morning and thank you to the band for doing our two new songs so well. Shout out to Tilly for her monster Trombone sound starting one of our songs all by herself and also to Kasey for bringing the drumbeat thunder. Our band produces a huge wall of sound. Good job. Stay tuned for our next event in Week 10 where we play even more new songs in a massive band with Toogoolawah and Linville.”
P&C News
P&C Meeting 3.30 pm Wednesday, 24 July. Come and join our volunteers making our school even greater!
Grandparents/Seniors Day
Seniors from our community joined us and our lovely grandparents for a special day. As well as the great entertainment provided by our very talented students, the Kops in Kilts and the Caboolture Car Club, they also enjoyed a lovely morning tea and sausage sizzle. Thank you to everyone who brought some goodies in and Rick and Leesa for cooking up a storm.
School Band
Thank you to Mr Smith and our school band for a wonderful start to our celebrating Seniors Day. It was great to hear how far you have grown over the year. Keep up the great work.
Caboolture Car Club
Thanks to the Caboolture Car Club for their second visit to Harlin State School. It created a great amount of interest for both students and seniors. Looking forward to seeing you again next year. Your support for the Student Council by buying their produce was really appreciated.
Kops in Kilts -Queensland Pipes and Drums Band
The wonderful Kops delighted us with their trip around the world through music. From Scotland to Mexico the songs were wonderful and we had a few laughs along the way. Looking forward to seeing you next year. Please click on the photos if you want to see the whole picture.
Roll and Strike
Thank you, Mr and Mrs Packenham for picking up our bowling equipment from Caboolture. Mrs Mac showed us how to hold and roll the ball. It was quite a challenge trying to get a strike but we had a few on the first day and even more as we started to compete in week 2.
Bike Ride
Thank you Al and Lisa for transporting the bikes and supplies for our 2024 bike ride. We were again joined by the QPS Bike Squad and of course Steve from the rural fire brigade. Once we got to Linville, it was lovely to be welcomed by a hot sausage sizzle and some sweet treats at the end of a freezing ride. Students enjoyed some games to finish of a fun day.
Athletics Day - TSS
Fabulous day, fabulous kids, and fabulous performances! We came away with the Aggregate Trophy, but more importantly we had students who tried their best, showed excellent sportsmanship and supported each other. Of special mention is Blake and Peyton, who only had 2 events but stayed until presentation as a sign of respect for their school, fellow classmates and the event. Penny was equal first for age champion (10 Years) and Brax was age champion for 11 years. We had many placings which allowed us to take the Aggregate trophy. Once again, thanks to our parents and grandparents for supporting the kids and the event.
Student Council
CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE: Containers will be picked up next week and the containers money will be added to the camp fundraising. (all of the containers in the bins were donated by year 6 students)
PLANT STALL: Still running hot even though it isn’t great plant growing weather. We had a wonderful donation of hundreds of pots from a lady who lives in Gatton. Thank you, Ann. Of course, Mrs Blackmore has been planting and watering. We would be lost without you Mrs Blackmore.
PURCHASES: Student Council has voted to purchase a new shade cover with our Dingo and Roo logos on each side. It looks fantastic and will hopefully arrive this term. We have also purchased a new popcorn machine as the old one decided it had had enough.
FUN DAY: Crazy hair day is our fundraiser this term. Date to be advised. This will be a gold coin donation.
