Principal Report
Next week, we are halfway through the term and our learning is going at a cracking pace.
We have lots of extra-curricular activities to make learning fun and engaging. Let's hope our training pays off at the Ball Games Carnival in Week 7. It is a great opportunity to demonstrate our team work in a competitive environment. I have heard other schools have set a challenge to knock us off our perch! Book Week is in Week 9 with the theme 'Reading is Magic'. We look forward to lots of 'magic' happening on this day. We are excited about the performance of 'Matilda' at Toogoolawah State High School. We are very proud that Summer, a former student, will be the lead on this day. Also, in Week 9 is our 2nd Bush Dance at the Moore Hall. In Week 10, we have U8's Day, students from Prep to Year 4 will have a sleep-over opportunity at school and the Year 5-6 will attend Somerset Cup at Toogoolawah State High School. See our date claimers.
The 2024 School Opinion Survey is now open. If you have been emailed to respond, it would be appreciated if you would take the time to complete the survey. The more feedback we receive the better our data will represent the whole school community. Well done to all parents - we have 100% of QParents! This has made a considerable decrease in paperwork for Mrs Enks. Thank you.
We have 2 trees (silky oaks) that need to be removed to make way for the new playground. They are situated adjacent to the school-house front fence. If you have any concerns about their removal from an historical or sentimental viewpoint, please contact Angela Devlin by Wednesday 7 August. A P&C executive member needs to sign off that the community is 'endorsing' their removal. The silky oaks provide poor shade cover and will be replaced with more suitable shade trees.
A huge thanks to Mrs Blackmore for taking student entries to the Kilcoy Show. The results were a 3rd this time for our jam, 1st for turnips, 1st for snow peas and a 1st for vegetables of 3 varieties. Mrs Wendt is also reading with students after her knitting session on a Tuesday. We are lucky to have community-oriented seniors like Mrs Blackmore. Mrs Blacklock and Mrs Wendt.
You will see we have a focus on reporting bullying for our PBL focus. Upcoming is the National Bullying - No Way week of action. From our support for 'Day for Dolly', we know that bullying can be fatal. Today, Mrs Packenham focused on recognising what is bullying and what is just plain mean or nasty. Neither have a place in our school and we have an agreed plan for dealing with these incidents. We also have a focus on assertiveness. It is important children are taught skills to stand up to bullies, both as victims and as bystanders. Mrs Packenham also focused on how to respond to nasty or mean comments and how to report bullying. We also reviewed our Floppy Jellyfish, Shark and Dolphin characteristics. Students aim to be a confident and assertive dolphin who can use 'I' statements to let others know how their unkind words are not appropriate or ok.
You are invited to take part in our final Ten Pin Bowling session on Tuesday, at 2 pm. It is amazing how well our students have picked up the skills to be able to bowl successfully. Some adult competition would challenge some of our senior students.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.
Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
Science is all about energy this term! P-2 have investigated sound energy by hitting, shaking and scraping different musical instruments. 3s and 4s tested how heat moves by immersing spoons in warm water (plastic, metal, and wooden). Each spoon had a dob of butter and a sequin stuck to the top. Only the metal spoon melted the butter, so we concluded that metal conducts heat.
We are deep into The Twits in English. 3s and 4s are examining the plot structure and language features in the text, and have had a crack at expanding a draft prank by adding more ‘drama’. Students then revised their work by ‘showing’ rather than ‘telling’ what the characters are thinking and doing. The Prep-2s have been retelling the awful pranks and sharing their opinions of the characters and events.
In Maths, 3s and 4s are moving on from their problem-solving work to measurement. In the coming weeks we will be measuring length, mass, capacity and temperature, which should be great fun! The Prep-2s have just finished a fortnight of chance experiments! We have had lots of fun flipping coins (and sheep!). Next week the Prep-2s will start learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects.
Prep-4s are learning about maps in HASS. The Prep-2s are using Lego to create a model of a fictious place. They have started to take aerial photos of their model which they will use to create a map.
On Wednesday, Nate surprised his class by bringing in 21 super fluffy, super cute ducklings! The ducklings were only 3 days old. We all enjoyed observing the ducklings and giving them cuddles!

Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
Students are 'right into' devising their 'pranks' for our English assessment. Some border on assault! Next, we will be 'revising' to ensure all the required language features and text structures have been included in a new chapter. There have been a few pranks in the classroom with mixed up tidy trays, and some arachnids and insects arrived this week, making their way into various nooks and crannies!
5s and 6s are investigating light in Science. Students made shadow puppets and conducted a fair test to determine what happens to the size of a shadow when an object moves further away from the light source.
These cold mornings made it perfect for a hot chocolate to celebrate success with our x tables. In maths, students are calculating area, volume and capacity. Today, we touched on calculating the capacity of a cylinder. We thought lots of marshmallows in a hot chocolate would help us to learn about displacement!
In Health, Mrs Bell has spoilt our students with foods from other cultures. The aim is to ignite an appreciation of how a varied diet is healthy. The butter chicken was amazing! Thanks Mrs Bell.
We are working on expectations both in and out of the classroom, a reminder of the leadership roles accepted and the initiative required, and as we get closer to graduation, thinking before we act. This will ensure a successful end to Term 3 and a great start to Term 4.

PLANT STALL: We have some lovely Air plants on our stand at the moment. Plenty out the back if you would like to pick one up for your garden. We are looking for any Bromeliads or Air plants for our stall. Any donations would be appreciated. How great were our winning vegetables at the Kilcoy Show? Thankyou Mrs Blackmore for entering them for us. They sure taste great too.
