Principal Report
Congratulations to our Brisbane Valley Cluster Schools Athletics Team members who brought home the Aggregate Trophy from last Friday's competition. Whilst not all students were successful, this award would not have been won without the effort from the whole team. Best of luck to Brax and Penny (10 yrs Age Champion) who will be representing the Lockyer Zone in Toowoomba on Tuesday. Thanks to parents who transported and supported our team last Friday and Mr Murdoch who was our team manager.
This week we have discussed and completed various activities in recognition of 'Bullying. No Way'. Year 5-6 had a TEAMS meeting with Kinota Braithwaite an African American author based in Tokyo. What stood out was the wide-ranging effect bullying has on not only the victim but the family and school community. Parents are also deeply hurt when their child experiences bullying. Kinota detailed his experience with racism and the devastating details from his daughter that she was being bullied because of her skin colour. Eliminating bullying requires our whole school community on board, ready to stand up to unacceptable behaviour. Our students are the future to minimising bullying and bigotry in our community.
On the Student Free Day, staff will be participating in the moderation of assessment tasks with a focus on Version 9 of the maths curriculum. This will be followed by reading and we are aiming to have our whole school program finished this year. Lastly, staff will be updating first aid qualifications.
Some students require more school supplies for their learning. Staff have sent home a reminder request for these requirements. It would be appreciated if you could please action these requests promptly so your child can participate effectively in their learning.
We are starting to count down towards assessment for Term 3. Recently, we have been hit with a nasty virus effecting students, parents and staff of which we have little control. However, it is a good time to remind our school community that once recovered, attendance is our focus. Attendance directly correlates with school success. Shopping, holidays, birthdays, and attending events during school time are not acceptable reasons for absence. We appreciate that extended absences will occur from time to time and this requires negotiation with the Principal. There are sometimes other circumstances and you are welcome to discuss or communicate these with me. Staff work incredibly hard to ensure high professional standards in our planning, delivery and assessment. Your commitment to our attendance goal rewards our efforts.
Some parents/carers will have received an invitation to complete the annual School opinion survey. Please take the time to complete as this will provide a greater diversity of data for contemplation and action going forward. The survey only takes a few minutes and helps us to reflect on what we are doing well and on what we can improve. Thank you.
We have some ideas for our new playground on display in the library. Please take the opportunity this week to have a look. While not exhaustive, the ideas will give us a starting point for a design that suits the size and position of the area near the oval. At the end of this week, we will send these ideas to our Project Coordinator. Once we have some idea of costs and a plan, the review process will start again amongst our school community until finalisation of our playground plan.
This week we have Book Week Dress-up on Wednesday and Ball Games on Friday. I look forward to seeing our school community support these events. The Year 6 Transition Day and the Student Free Day is coming up in Week 8.
We are thankful for the rain that has topped up our tanks. Running out of water last week reminds us to be careful with this precious resource.
Have a great weekend.
Regards
Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.
Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
Last week the Prep-2s finished reading The Twits. Students are currently identifying the plot structure and sharing their opinions and personal connections to the characters and events. 3s and 4s are working hard in English to see what it takes to create an engaging text. Students have examined ways to improve a draft piece of writing – using better verbs, including expanded noun groups, and using a variety of sentence types. This week we have focussed on how to write complex sentences!
Finally, thank you parents for your efforts with homework and home reading so far this term! Most Prep-4 students recently selected a small prize from our homework prize box for completing homework twice this term. A large number of students have also completed 5 weeks-worth of homework this term and will be rewarded with ‘Free Time’.
Maths 3-4
Maths … If it can be measured, Year 3s and 4s are measuring it! We’ve used thermometers to measure temperature; we’ve used rulers and tape measures to determine length; and we’ve used a variety of measuring instruments – jugs, cylinders, spoons, and syringes – to measure capacity. Our heads are spinning with centimetres and metres, millilitres and litres, and degrees Celsius. Just wait until we tackle mass next week!
Science 3-4
Science has been fabulous for 3s and 4s too. This week we investigated what heat does to popcorn kernels. Students labelled diagrams of ‘before’ and ‘after’ the kernels went into the microwave. What a difference two minutes can make in the life of a popcorn kernel…
P-2 Maths
Prep-2s have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects. The students have found lots of examples of these shapes and objects in and around our classroom. Bodhi is our current Shape Swat Quiz champion!
Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
Year 5-6 are heading towards completing their unit of measurement. They have constructed a cubic meter and changed it to a rectangular prism but with the same capacity. Students have looked at the displacement of water by 3D objects and its associated link to millilitres. Sharing 300 grams of lolly snakes amongst the class was a tasty way to measure and work out the problem.
All students have participated in calculation of area and perimeter of the classroom, playground and walkways. Activities have included recognition of measurements that make sense in everyday life. We have discussed why a bucket on a loader is designated a cubic meter measurement.
Students are now constructing a 'prank' for The Twits novel, remembering to use the language features and text structures investigated this term. Peers have been a sounding board for ideas.
We had some great questions for Kinota in our week of Anti-bullying. He was very honest and emotional about his grief when his daughter, Mio, experienced bullying.
