Principal Report
In Term 4 we have lots of learning and lots of activities! We have had a fabulous start to the term with students eager to get their learning completed and move on to the next task.
Last Friday, we set up the marquee that the 2024 Student Council funded as part of their legacy for the school community. The marquee and the small house flags are spectacular! Congratulations to Mrs Philp, Mrs Blackmore and our Year 6 students on their fundraising and efforts. We will appreciate this marquee for many years to come.
World Teachers' Day will be celebrated on Thursday 24th of October. This is a great opportunity to thank our teachers for the wonderful work they do to make your child, the best they can be.
Please see our Term 4 Curriculum Overview which details our focus for the remainder of the term. Next week we have our Parent - Teacher-Student Catch-ups. We look forward to reviewing your child's growth in Term 3 and setting some goals for the next 9 weeks of Term 4.
On Friday 25th of October, we participate in 'Day for Daniel' and revise our safety strategies of Recognise, React and Report. Our PBL will also tie in with this personal safety message.
Swimming starts in Week 6 for 10 sessions of an hour. The final session will have Dingoes vs. Roos in some fun activities. It is time to check for goggles and a swimming cap (long hair). These are essential items to ensure your child has the best chance of improving their swimming and water safety skills. Year 5 & 6 will also practise snorkelling and safety drills.
The Harlin/Linville Swimming Carnival is on Monday, 2 December at the Kilcoy Aquatic Centre. As many parents usually support this day, we are asking for your help to provide or arrange transport to and from the venue. If you have difficulty providing or finding transportation, please contact our office.
This year we will celebrate our Awards and Christmas Concert at the Toogoolawah State High School Hall. This is a fabulous facility with all the equipment we require to make it a great night with less work for individuals. We thank TSHS for the invitation to use this facility.
Congratulations to Brax Bechly who represented Harlin State School as a member of the Darling Downs Region Athletics Team. Brax participated in both shotput and discus at the QSAC at Nathan. He performed admirably against some very tough competition, and we are very proud of his efforts.
Mrs Enks will be taking Maternity Leave from the 24th of October. We wish Megan all the best and look forward to the excitement of a new member of the Enks family.
We welcome and congratulate Ash-Lee Thallon who will be our acting Business Manager for the remainder of 2024.
Thanks again to all of our community for all that you do to make our school, great!
Have a safe and relaxing weekend.
Warm regards,
Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.
Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher
Welcome to Term 4!
We’ve kicked off our poetry unit in English with The Triantiwontigongolope by CJ Dennis! Students will explore humorous poems throughout this term and make an adaptation of one to perform. Should be a hoot!
Science is all about matter this term. P-2 will explore how materials change when twisted, bent, stretched, moulded, folded, crushed … and also what happens when materials are heated or cooled. 3s and 4s examine materials in terms of the three states of matter – solids, liquids, and gases – and explore how heat and cold impact a material’s state. This week we’ve explored custard!
In Maths, our Year 3s have explored the properties of 3D objects while Year 4s have compared areas of 2D shapes using a variety of informal units. Prep-2s have been practising their counting, adding and subtracting, and writing number sentences. Charlie and Mac have started learning about multiplication and division by creating equal groups.

Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher
We have had a cracking start to term 4 and are making progress with our poetry unit. Students have investigated the classic poems of "My Country' by Dorothea McKellar and "Mulga Bill's Bicycle' by Banjo Patterson. We have looked at language features and text structures that make a humorous poem - humorous! Students created a limerick and will continue to adapt poems, ready to create a funny poem for assessment. Today, the class presented 'On the Ning, Nang, Nong' by Spike Milligan at parade.
In Maths, both classes have been revising and studying angles and remembering how to use a protractor. Investigation continues with 3D objects and 2D shapes and their nets.
Our first week of Science in Term 4 involved classifying materials by their properties then exploring the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Students tried compressing a solid (sand), a liquid (water), and a gas (air) in a syringe. They found that of the three, only air could be compressed. In Week 3, students will explore properties of gases in more detail.
Reading and number facts are handed out on Monday and need to be returned on Friday.
Students are being reminded to make good choices as the year nears to an end. We have lots of work to do in the next few weeks as swimming and camp approaches.

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing
Hi Harlin Family,
This is Jill the Wellbeing Social Worker at Harlin school I visit on Thursday once a fortnight on the even weeks. Today’s piece for the newsletter is about our Window of Tolerance.
Have you noticed this – throughout any given hour, day, or week, our emotions fluctuate quite a bit? That’s normal, and common. And, on days where we feel a lot, we might also have periods in between the “big” emotions where we feel zoned out, numb, tired, or shut down.
For those overcoming anxiety (or other anxiety-related disorders like trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc.), the swings between “big” emotion and feeling knocked out may be even more pronounced.
So what’s going on there? Dan Siegel (in 1999) developed a model to explain this fluctuation. He called it Window of Tolerance. His model is outlined in the image below, from the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioural Medicine (NICABM; 2019).
Essentially, Siegel’s (1999) model suggests we all have an optimal amount of emotion that we can tolerate with reasonable skilfulness. This is our Window of Tolerance. If we have experienced overwhelming difficulties in our lives this can affect the size of our window.
If you would like to know more about the Window of Tolerance, contact me on my email and I can organise a time to walk you through this model. My email is jbouc17@eq.edu.au
Instrumental & School Band - Mr Smith
Another fabulous opportunity at the Moore Hall on Saturday, 19 October for our Instrumental band. Once again perform for the community and Moore Market crowd. Looking forward to another great session. See you at 9.45 am for a 10 am start.
