Principal news
This term we have 11 weeks. Our final activities for the year will be on Monday 9 December with the Awards and Christmas Concert. On Friday 13 of December, at the end of parade, our Year 6 students will ring the school hand bell to signal their final call at primary school. We will then make an arch for our Year 6 students to pass out through the gate to their next adventure. Week 11 will be a planning week for teaching staff and a chance to do mandatory training for 2025. There will be lots of opportunities for Christmas craft and fun activities.
A dedicated group of P&C members provided an amazing event last Saturday. The inaugural Trivia Night was a huge success and raised enough funds to send Year 5 & 6 students to the Coral Coast for camp. Students will see turtles laying eggs at the Mon Repos Conservation Park and fly to Lady Elliot Island, where they will swim with sea life and investigate the coral reef. The history of cane will be on display at Fairymead House, then they are off to see the first aviator to fly solo from England to Australia, Bert Hinkler. The Bundaberg History Museum is the final stop on tour. These places of interest are all located in the beautiful Bundaberg Botanic Gardens. Walking along the Turtle Trail in front of our camp, students will have plenty of time to view the Woongarra Coastline and there will be time to swim at The Basin Lagoon. It will be a camp to remember.
The success of the Trivia Night was many months in the planning and an incredible amount of work was done to bring this idea to fruition. Katie Buckley, Lisa Bechly, Angela Devlin, Latoya Thomson, Ash-Lee Thallon, Jo Peters, Emily Kettleton, Megan Enks, Karly Carey and Jenny Buckley have dedicated the last 10 weeks to making this fundraiser possible. Acknowledgement to David Thallon and Allan Bechly and also to the extended families of these members, who also contributed to the event. Sponsors were extremely generous and winners received some fabulous prizes. It was great to see our Year 5 & 6 students assisting with the fundraiser. Haley, Brax, Reece, Ollie, Bridi, Henrietta, Blake and Harlan were able to appreciate the many tasks, first hand. Thanks to community members, staff and parents who supported the event.
On Thursday, we celebrated World Teachers' Day and recognised once again the effort and energy expended by our teaching staff. Thanks again to Mrs Packenham, Ms Fisher, Ms Graham, Mr Smith, Dr. T and Mrs Bell. You are loved and treasured members of our school community and we are lucky to have you.
Today we recognised Day for Daniel and remembered the safety message of Recognise, React and Report. The concept of 'consent' takes on a different meaning in secondary school. However, in primary school it relates to a child's personal space and how they can restrict others entering into this space in a respectful way. Students discuss how it is important to gain permission before assuming their actions are ok. Enthusiastic consent means you are comfortable with the behaviour of your friends. This learning is part of Respectful Relationships education.
The Concert Band played in Moore last Saturday morning and I have had reports that students put on a terrific performance. Their musical growth has been noted by many. Thank you, Mr Smith for giving up your Saturday morning, and parents for helping your children attend.
The best way to communicate messages (not absences) is via the school mobile phone. The office is staffed on Tuesday and Thursday only. The mobile phone will be checked at each break; 11.00 am., 1.15 pm and 3 pm. The teacher on bus duty will check the bus roll for any changes to routine and the phone for messages. Please do not expect an immediate response when the office is not staffed as our focus is on teaching. In an emergency and when the office is not staffed, continue to call the mobile and we will assume it is urgent.
Bus travel students will be put on the bus unless a message has been forwarded to the school. Some children tell us they are being picked up, only to then be still here as the bus arrives. We will act on adult communications only. Please use the mobile phone to communicate pick up changes, before 3 pm.
Thank you for using QParents to notify the school of your child's absence, reason and expected return. We have 100% of parents signed on and use of QParents is our means of communication for absences and permission forms. Please remember that a valid reason is required for absences.
We are now heading into week 5 where we start to consolidate learning for the term, ready for assessment. Attendance is crucial, especially as we have 2 weeks of swimming ahead. We value your respect for our teaching and learning when you ensure 'Every Day Counts.' Thank you.
The P&C is looking for help to do the bbq at the Swimming Carnival on Monday 2 December. As you can imagine, this small group needs a rest. Please contact Ange, Emily or Lisa Bechly if you can take a turn. It would be much appreciated.
Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Term 4, Week 4
P-4 class
The Prep-2s have been enthusiastically practising adjectives by writing poems about vehicles such as bikes, cars, trucks and jet-skis. We have also had fun singing nursery rhymes and remembering the actions.
After the excitement of The Triantiwontigongolope, our Year 3 and Year 4 students are now dealing with young Timothy being locked in a lavatory! We’ve studied the rhyme and rhythm and found that fitting the words to the tune is a little tricky at times. We’ve dabbled in alliteration, discovered more nonsense words – topsy-turvy; higgledy-piggledy; timfooling trickery – and also adapted a stanza of the poem. Limericks are the next humorous poems for us to dive into!
During Maths, the Year 1s and 2s have been practising showing addition and subtraction problems with drawings, tens frames, number lines and number sentences. They have had lots of fun practising their number facts through interactive games on our interactive TV! Charlie and Mac are becoming confident with multiplication and keep asking if they can do more times tables activities. We love seeing students enjoy Maths!
In Maths, 3s and 4s have completed their work on angles and we’re into MONEY now! We will be adding totals, and calculating change, so we have a bunch of savvy shoppers. Students each have a stash of notes and coins to work with and they are itching to use the cash register in the classroom. It has also been fabulous to see how enthusiastic our students are about learning their number facts. Committing basic multiplication and division facts to memory means students can invest their energy in more complex concepts.
In Science, P-2 have been bending, twisting, and stretching different materials and recording their observations. Year 3s and 4s have investigated what happens to liquids when you remove heat from them. Students are full of questions about different substances and whether they are solids, liquids, or gases. They are also enjoying singing a song about the different states of matter!
To wrap up the fortnight, we participated in Day for Daniel by watching Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson (Lower Primary) created by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. This year’s video focused on enthusiastic consent, and blurred and crossed boundaries. We completed two different activities related to the video. The first was about body clues and the second was about our personal space boundaries. These activities reinforced this week’s PBL focus of being respectful and considering other people’s safety. The students have taken the worksheets home so they can discuss the concepts with their families. You can view the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F3sZdvbqkw&t=4s

English
Students are finalising poems and organising humorous illustrations. On Nana got thrown out of the Hilux this morning! We will then focus on all things Coral Coast.
Maths
Year 5 are calculating expenditure and income for our new permaculture garden fence, garden beds, soil and seedlings. Year 6 are calculating costs for meals at the Bagara Hotel and the associated % discount. Assessment will be next week.
Science
Students have been investigating gases with a range of activities. We’ve simulated the arrangement and behaviour of molecules of solids, liquids, and gases. Last week we combined a solid (bicarbonate soda) and a liquid (water) to produce a gas (carbon dioxide).
Day for Daniel
"R.E.S.P.E.C.T Respect is shared between you and me".
Students listened to Adam Goodes and his life-long battle with bullying. They discussed suitable choices when another student is injured or bullied. Students were reminded of the strategies for safe internet use.

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing
Hi Harlin Family,
This is Jill the Wellbeing Social Worker at Harlin school I visit on Thursday once a fortnight on the even weeks. Today’s piece for the newsletter is about the A-Z of Coping Skills. Check out the great images.
We are nearly half way through Term 4 and I thought a little reminder of the variety of coping skills we can use would be helpful to carry us to the end of term.
If you would like support putting coping skills in place for your child or for yourself, contact me on my email and I can organise a time to meet in person. My email is jbouc17@eq.edu.au
Instrumental & School Band - Mr Smith
“Eight members of our Concert Band performed at the Soldiers Memorial Hall in Moore on Saturday during the markets that happen there every third Saturday of the month. Our kids were sensational for playing with enormous confidence even when some of them were a bit nervous. We played our three songs and the crowd even loved one of them so much we did it again. The parents in the crowd were amazing also because they engaged in the audience participation part of the song wo well. A big shout out to Ollie in the audience for his strong voice. Well done to the beginners also for having so much courage in performance. We even got a nice treat from Linda from the hall at the end. Thanks Mums and Dads for bringing the kids out to perform.”
