Principal news

Swimming and water safety lessons has concluded, and all teachers were very pleased with the level of improvement. Next year, we look forward to adding two more lessons, if possible, to our schedule. Rusty, our bus driver, congratulated the children on their behaviour on the bus. This is excellent news as we have spoken lately about the correct behaviours during bus travel.
What an amazing group of seniors this year. The Student Council has almost hit the $10,000 mark for fundraising. This would not be possible without the leadership of Mrs Philp and the support of Mrs Blackmore. Students have also been supported by parents and community members who have donated plants and pots. The whole school will benefit from the end of year trip to the Caboolture Ten Pin Bowling Centre on Wednesday 4 December. Thank you, Seniors, Mrs Philp and Mrs Blackmore.
The Linville/Harin Swimming Carnival is approaching on Monday 2 December. Parents, please bring your cossie for the Parents vs Student relays. An order form for the bbq went home today and is due back with payment by Wednesday. Thanks again our P&C members who have volunteered once again to provide for your child. Please remember that transportation to and from the pool at Kilcoy is to be arranged by parents/carers.
Congratulations to our Seniors who conducted a respectful ceremony to mark the Armistice of 1918 and remember those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedoms we enjoy today. We also remember those men and women who have participated or are active in most recent conflicts and peace keeping efforts. Traditions live on with our students and they made our school community proud.
Week 9 is our final week for assessment. This provides for considered summative assessment for report cards. Staff spend a considerable amount of time ensuring students have every chance to demonstrate their understanding.
There is no parade due to camp next week. We look forward to seeing you at parade in Week 10. Please use QParents and our landline if necessary for Week 9 as the mobile phone will be the camp group.
Have an enjoyable weekend
Kind regards
Jo McCormick
Week 9 Communication

Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher

The end of the term is in sight and students are working hard to show what they have learnt!
Our P-2 students have enjoyed their science unit this term. We’ve manipulated different materials and in the past two weeks we have investigated and timed melting ice, drawing diagrams of progress every five minutes. Students have also followed instructions to make an origami boat – bending, folding, and flattening paper to change their square to a new shape. 3s and 4s have completed their final science investigation, which was comparing how ice and chocolate melted.
In HASS, the Prep-2s are finalising their assessment pieces by drawing places at a personal, local, national and world scale that they have a connection to, and identifying places and geographical divisions on a globe and maps. Year 3s and 4s are completing their studies of South America and Africa by comparing Cairo (the capital city of Egypt) to Harlin. It has been fascinating to investigate the similarities and differences between cultures, animals, climate and vegetation!
Our final Maths unit for the term involves fractions. Year 3s investigate different representations of unit fractions and explain why a bigger denominator means a smaller fraction, while Year 4s dive into decimals – to hundredths!
The Prep-2s will soon bring home a book about themselves which they made as part of their Health assessment. Students are using these books to compare their identities. 3s and 4s have been learning about identity and positive interactions through group activities. The key point they have learnt is that a person’s identity is more than what someone looks like.
To finish our English unit for the term, students are completing their adaptation of a known poem. Prep-2s are using their senses to adapt In the Desert, while the Year 3s and 4s are adapting The Cow Tripped Over the Moon. Once written, the students will rehearse and present their poems! And look out for a sensational performance at the Christmas concert that will be a poetic delight!

Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher

Students are nearing completion of all assessment tasks with their tourism brochure to be reviewed and edited.
Week 10 is filled to the brim for Year 6 students. Monday is the swimming carnival at Kilcoy, Tuesday is Graduation Dinner at the Toogoolawah Golf Club, Wednesday is bowling and mini golf at Caboolture and Transition Day is Thursday and Friday.
Students are excited for a terrific camp next week. Bus leaves 8 am.
We have had some brain-teasing challenges with coins and matchsticks. I hope our students test their parents.
Thanks to Year 6 parents who have organised payment for Graduation. We look forward to a great night.

5-6 SCIENCE
Our last science session for the year was a mix of joy and sadness. Joy that assessment is finished! And joy too because we had a fabulous Q & A session where students asked brain-bending science questions and Miss Fisher tried valiantly to answer them. Sadness though, knowing that it was my last formal science lesson with my Year 6s, Penny, and Tilly. The photo is blurry because I couldn’t see the iPad properly through my tears …

SCHOOL LEADER NOMINATIONS FOR 2025
Three students nominated for 2025 leadership positions. Speeches were outstanding and a credit to each student and their parents for the thoughtful compilation and delivery. Leaders will be announced on Monday 9th December.

LEST WE FORGET
On the 11th of the 11 we honoured all Australians who have served in wars, conflicts, or peacekeeping operations, and those who died or suffered. We held a minute of silence to remember.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING
Students had fun putting up our Christmas tree and what a great job they did. Hard to believe Christmas day is only 4 weeks away.

Instrumental and Band with Mr Smith
We have been practising our Christmas carols and our other songs for the Toogoolawah Christmas Carols at the Toogoolawah State High School Hall next week on Friday November 29. The free sausage sizzle starts at 6pm and the event starts at 7pm. We will perform 2 songs near the start of the evening and then another 2 songs a little bit later. Students are free to either sit with their family after our performing or go home. Please do not run around outside the hall in the dark as their will be no teacher supervision provided.

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing

Hi Harlin Family,
This is Jill the Wellbeing Social Worker at Harlin school I visit on a Thursday once a fortnight on the even weeks. Today’s piece for the newsletter is about a therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT for short. ACT is a therapy that can be useful for children. It emphasizes accepting thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them. If you want to know more about this approach, I suggest you go to Russ Harris’s website https://www.actmindfully.com.au/ . Russ is well known for his book The happiness Trap.
I have attached a poster to give you a taster of the approach called values what is important to me.
If you have any questions about the poster or ACT, please contact me on my email and I can organise a time to meet in person. My email is jbouc17@eq.edu.au
