Principal news

A hectic end our year demonstrated the resilience of our school community. With energy levels challenged, the P&C provided a fabulous barbeque before the Awards and Christmas Celebration. Our Senior students jumped on board as soon as we arrived back from camp and quickly put 2 performances together. The juniors entertained the crowd with their ears hanging low and the Instrumental Band displayed some very talented musicians. Ms Fisher led AUSLAN and Mrs Carey became our music expert helping in the absence of Ms Graham. Again, several staff and parents packed up the Hall in a matter of minutes. Thank you to this team who are always ready to give a bit extra at the end of any celebration we conduct. A huge thank you to Elizabeth Thallon for leading the technical side of our presentation.
Congratulations to Academic Excellence Award winners; Henrietta Thallon and Nate Young. Our academic achievement is our core business, and we will continue to make every effort to increase our A-B data. Well, done to students; Ollie Carey, Hayley Munro, Penny Packenham, Cleo Clarkson, Bella Bechly and Charlie Clarkson for your Academic Achievement awards. Thank you to Mrs Julie Lipp, who provided the $100 Bursary which was awarded to Ollie Carey for his academic diligence.
Within our quest for academic achievement, is our core values of resilience, kindness, appreciation, and attendance. These values were evident with the Citizenship Award and a very worthy recipient in Hayley Munro. Sport, like Art is an important avenue for students with talent. Congratulations to Brax Bechly for his Sporting Excellence Award, again in 2024.
We have had three occasions to farewell Mrs Packenham this week. Our very best wishes to Amanda, Penny and Oscar as they transition to St Pauls. Thank you to our school community members who were able to join us in the celebrations.
Today, we also farewelled our Year 6 students and we wish them all the best on their adventure into secondary education. The 2024 TSHS Transition Program has provided a thorough basis for a successful start to 2025. TSHS are very lucky to be receiving pleasant, trustworthy and responsible students. We will miss them a great deal and look forward to exchanges at the gate.
Report cards went home today. We have provided 2 opportunities with our Teacher-Parent-Student meetings this year. The report cards should reflect our communications, and we want to continue our academic conversations in 2025 to ensure your child is the best they can be.
Thank you to Elizabeth and Lara who spent the last week of term with us and provided a huge help with organising, cleaning, sorting and packing up. We appreciated your time and energy.
Students enjoyed pizza and lolly bags on Wednesday. Thanks once more to our small band of P&C members who made this possible.
On behalf of staff, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please enjoy a safe break with your family. We look forward to seeing you on the 28th of January.
Kind regards

HO, HO, HO! Santa visit

Prep - 4 News - Mrs Packenham and Ms Fisher

Well, we’ve made it to the last newsletter of 2024!
The last fortnight has been a mix of completing assessment and preparing for our Christmas Concert. We’d like to commend all students on their commitment to finishing assessment tasks. Students gave their full effort and with zero complaining, which was wonderful!
After the excitement of our poetry unit this term, our class performed Do Your Ears Hang Low? at the Christmas Concert.
We wish all our families a safe and happy Christmas break, and hope that you make many fabulous memories this festive season.
Goodbye from Mrs Packenham:
On a personal note, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all members of the school community, past and present, that I have had the privilege of working with since 2017. I have had a few tears over the past fortnight as the reality of saying goodbye and moving on sinks in. I am off on a new teaching adventure in 2025. It will be a big change for me and my family, and although I am excited (and nervous!), I am grateful for the time I’ve had at Harlin State School. I will miss the students dearly and wish them all the best for their future schooling.

Year 4-6 News - Mrs Mac and Ms Fisher

I was very proud of our senior students who enthusiastically practised for the Awards and Christmas concert and also completed a HASS assessment. We were all exhausted from a great camp, and with the Swimming Carnival and Transition we had minimal time to prepare. However, the show must go on and well done, Senior Students.
We wish Penny all the best at her new school, St. Pauls, and no doubt we will hear of her endeavours. We are sad to say goodbye to Tilly Marshall. Tilly started in Prep in 2019 and it has been a pleasure watching her education journey. We wish you all the very best in your new school Tilly and you will be missed.
A safe and relaxing holiday break to all in our Harlin State School family.
Instrumental and Band with Mr Smith

I am so proud of the fantastic job the instrumental band did on Monday night. How amazing was our new Rock Band? I’m looking forward to seeing how they all go next year. It has been a pleasure working with these wonderful groups. Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a relaxing break. Although I will not be teaching at Harlin in 2025, I look forward to seeing you at our concert performances.

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing

Hi Harlin Family,
Well, we made it to week 10 and I know I’m looking forward to the school holidays. Having never worked in Queensland Education before I was amused when other staff told me you’ll start talking in weeks but here I am celebrating week 10.
Today’s piece for the newsletter is about looking beyond behaviour to unexpressed needs. Ok what does that mean, this is about reframing attention seeking behaviour to what is my child trying to tell me and what needs are they expressing. Even as adults we can, at times, display attention seeking behaviour and have unexpressed needs that we are trying to get met such as; connect with me, understand me or protect me.
This time of year, can be stressful we are often busier than usual with extra social demands and financial pressures. We can be emotionally triggered, especially if we have recently lost someone close and everyone is talking about getting together with family and friends.
So instead of attention seeking perhaps we can reframe how we perceive behaviour to connection seeking, attunement seeking or attachment seeking. Looking under others behaviour to their unmet needs could be the best Christmas gift you give your family.
I have attached a poster to highlight the three reasons we might display Attention Seeking behaviours.
Wishing everyone all the best over the school holidays and I’m looking forward to seeing you all in 2025.

Year 5-6 Camp
Students enjoyed an amazing camp. The highlight was the flight and snorkelling on Lady Elliot Island. There will be memories for many years to come.
