Principal news

Welcome back to 2025. We have had a cracking start and students have been fantastic in the way in which they have stepped up to new challenges, routines and expectations. Thank you to our parents for helping children to make a fabulous start to the new school year.
Today, we recognised our Seniors who will help lead our school through 2025. We were very pleased to have Mrs Deb. Frecklington to present badges to Henrietta, Harlan and Blake.
Our grounds are looking great and the new shed on the oval has provided a safe storage space for Ken and Anthony. Now that we have our oval shed, we can order the outdoor play equipment provided by the Gambling Community Grant. The 'Outdoor Learning Area' requires a paint, the air-conditioning will then be installed and two walls of floor to ceiling storage. This will allow Ms Graham easy access to the library storage room and will open up new storage and access for our P&C and school. We await a 'Learning Wall' for A Block over the Easter and new access from C Block for senior students to the ablution block.
A final proof of the playground was presented to students on parade today. After 30 years and many tries at gaining a new playground, we have jumped one hurdle! Now, we await to see if the discretionary funds will cover the shortfall of the added shade structures. We had only one company come back with a final design and quote. The final submission took into account as much as possible, feedback from students and the community The final design is in the office if you would like to have a look.
Good luck to Bella and Cleo who will be representing the Cluster at Zone Swimming on Friday 21st of February. Best wishes to Blake who is attending the trials for Zone Cricket team selection on Tuesday. Thanks again to parents for following up with your support for students to attend the next level of competition.
I am on Leave for 2 weeks. Ms Fisher is acting principal. Mrs Bell and Mrs Nutt will be working with both Years 1-3 and 4-6.
Please join our Parade at 2.45 pm on a Friday. We aim to provide some snippets of our learning as well as recognising our 'Students of the Week'. We look forward to seeing you.
Have a great weekend.
Regards

Year 1- 3 News - Mrs Mac

There has been much 'Fi Fi Fo Fum' in the classroom and Year 1- 3 is full steam ahead with all things, Fairytales. We have looked at the structure of Jack and the Beanstalk and together we have identified the beginning (orientation), the middle (complication or problem) and the end (resolution). We have made the setting - Jack's house, the barn, the small village and the almighty huge beanstalk. On Friday, during art we made puppets and constructed a puppet theatre. We also planted three magic beans in a pot below the clouds and the giant's large castle. Looking forward to a huge beanstalk, growing! Our focus has been on nouns and noun groups and how these help us to write better and more interesting tales.
In maths, our focus is number: operations, counting, identifying place value, expanding and partitioning. The year 3's were very keen to get into millions on Wednesday with Mrs Bell.
HAAS is all about geography of our local area this term and then we will swap to the history of our area. We have started with google earth to help us identify continent, state, Somerset and Harlin. This will allow us to build a model of the local area and label the major features.
In Science, we are looking at Earth’s Treasures this term. Students enjoyed a treasure hunt around the school in Week 1, and this week they have made ice cream. While slurping their chocolatey ice cream, we discussed how Earth provides the resources we can use to make such delicious treats.
The Arts: Thanks to Kirralee and Colton who are helping each Friday. Last week we made puppets and a theatre. Today, we made the Three Little Pig's houses. We are tying our art in with the Fairytale theme.
Did you know? Albert Einstein, celebrated as “the quintessential modern genius,” is credited a having said, "If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be very intelligent, read them more fairy tales."

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

We’ve welcomed Sam and Josh into our class and they are doing a great job adapting to our class routines!
In English we’ve revised our parts of speech and written some creative sentences as well as a prepositional poem. Students are enjoying Readers’ Theatre, which is a fun way to improve reading fluency. Watching all of them present in front of the class was fabulous!
We have a Geometry focus in Maths to start with which will be followed by a Data unit. Our number focus will be fractions. Number facts will be a focus … always. 😊 Check out our polygons, rotational symmetry, and tessellation work.
Maths

Our Science revolves our changes to the Earth’s surface as a result of natural events. We’re kicking off with a bit of geology – looking at rocks, then moving onto volcanoes. Students really impressed me with their work this week, reading in pairs and then completing a concept map on rocks. They were focused and diligent and I loved how they supported each other as they discussed their ideas.

Instrumental and Band with Miss Graham

Wow! What a start to Instrumental Music for 2025! Lessons started this week with all of the students being super excited!
Our beginners made a great start to learning their new instruments. Austin and Alex began making some very professional sounds almost immediately on the trumpet and trombone. Bella, Henrietta and Peyton learned all about reeds and took great care when assembling their alto sax and clarinet. Eithan also achieved success immediately when playing the flute for the first time. Harlan was very supportive of his class mates and is looking forward to the electric bass arriving next week!
The continuing students also impressed Miss Graham! Cleo, Eliza and Kacey all wowed her by showing her the hardest song they knew, called 'Love Somebody'.
Band will start in Week 3 for the continuing students, and once the beginners can play their first five notes, they will be invited to join band too.
Miss Graham would like to thank the parents who signed and returned the notes for instrumental music so promptly. Those students took their instruments home today. If you have yet to return those, please do so as soon as possible so that the students who are borrowing school instruments can take them home. If you have any concerns about the fees, please contact Mrs McCormick.
If you ever need to contact Miss Graham about either classroom music or instrumental music, please email her on cgrah65@eq.edu.au or leave a message at the school office. She would love to hear from you!

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing

Hi Harlin Family,
Welcome to the 2025 school year. I hope you all had a lovely break I know for me it felt like I blinked and the holidays were over. Despite the speed I’m excited to be back at Harlin and to have the opportunity to be of assistance to the Harlin family.
As this is the first newsletter, I want to take the opportunity to let you know what a wellbeing social worker can provide in the school environment so I have attached a wellbeing social worker placemat.
I know this placemat can be a little dry however parents often wonder; what does the wellbeing social worker do? Or would she be able to help our family? This placemat will give you more information about my role.
Here’s to a fabulous school year and to us working together to support each other.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
What a great year we had in 2024!
We sent 14,181 containers in raising $1418.10. Aluminium cans came in at the top with 9780 cans. Containers for Change have given us the name of......
ALUMIMIUM AVENGERS.
PLANT STALL
$1350 was banked after the holidays. Huge thank you for Mrs Blackmore for helping keep everything alive.
We are hoping to buy more equipment for the playground and will purchase an air conditioner to go into the outdoor learning area that we use to make our popcorn and will use for cooking and art.
We have a lady called Pat from Toogoolawah and Marianne (Friend of Cleo and Charlie’s family) who regularly drop off beautiful plants ready to sell. How lucky are we to have such a wonderful community.
Huge thank you to Katie and Lisa who often pick up or donate plants and pots.
POPCORN/ZOOPER DOOPER ROSTER
With only 3 year 6 students this year, we need everyone to help out on Thursdays.
Together we do great things.
