Acting Principal news

Thanks to the Harlin Staff Team for pulling together in Mrs Mac’s absence to continue to support our students in the fine learning that happens here! Students haven’t skipped a beat this last fortnight and it has been lovely to see the commitment they have shown to their learning.
Around the grounds …
Our outdoor learning area is in the process of being painted.
A new set of stairs is being installed outside the senior classroom. Once complete, students will no longer have to walk around the back of the building to access the existing playground area.
Plans for the new playground continue to progress. Staff have provided feedback on the proposed colour scheme. Mrs Mac will now take the student and staff feedback to the next P & C meeting.
We have new signs around the school to remind us to be on the lookout for the slithering reptiles that share our grounds. Though, it is not just the legless reptiles we need to watch out for. Sam had a strawberry pinched from between his fingers by a very bold Steve! They clearly love fruit. They have even commandeered the bird feeder.
Now that our Year 6 students have their leadership badges, they are off to the GRIP Leadership Day in Toowoomba next week. I will be donning my Bus Driver hat to chauffeur our leaders (along with Toogoolawah State School students) to the event on Tuesday.
Just a reminder on morning routines. Morning supervision commences at 8:15. Any students arriving at school before that should be supervised by a parent or guardian until staff are on duty.
We welcome Mrs Mac back next week. While I am supremely grateful for the support I’ve received from staff, students, and parents in her absence, I am happy to be handing back the reins. 😊
Have a great weekend!

Year 1- 3 News - Mrs Bell this fortnight!

I have enjoyed filling in for Mrs Mac while she has been on leave.
This last fortnight in Maths, we have been increasing our number word recognition, as well as skip counting on number lines. The 2-3s have worked on place value of large numbers. In our fraction work, we have been dividing numbers into equal parts: halves, quarters, and eighths. We’ve also had fun dividing pizza and chocolate evenly.
We have made a dam system in the sandpit for HASS! Students learnt how gravity helps to move water from high elevations to lower valleys.
In English, Goldilocks and the Three Bears featured, with many adaptions of these. We are currently working on creating our own adapted fairy tale as a group, then moving on to individual stories.
Happy learning,
Mrs Bell

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

This fortnight has flown by!
In English we’ve been focusing on grammar and constructing complex sentences. We’re deep into our play scripts – the students are loving Readers’ Theatre. Our next job is to write a play script for a fractured fairy tale. I’m rubbing my hands together in anticipation of what they will produce!
Students have completed their first Maths focus which was transforming 2D shapes. Now they are moving on to mapping and co-ordinate work. Students are also consolidating place value and fractions.

Science is hot at the moment! Students have examined rock samples in their study of the Earth’s surface. They also simulated the movement of tectonic plates with Mars Bars! This week, they have studied how volcanoes erupt. 🤯

In HASS, we have commenced our local history unit by constructing a timeline. Students placed significant events on a scaled timeline, commencing with the first European settler to enter the Brisbane Valley in 1841.

Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to Cleo and Bella who represented Harlin SS at the Zone Swimming Carnival today. The girls helped Brisbane Valley bring home the aggregate trophy once more.

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing

Hi Harlin Family,
Can you believe we are nearly half way through Term 1. In this newsletter I have attached a handout called Gaming and Screen use in students.
Whilst this handout will give you some good information it is sometimes easier to talk with someone if you have other questions or want to explore ways of managing your child’s screen use.
Please feel free to contact me and I can sit with you or a group of you to go through the handout together.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE: ALUMIMIUM AVENGERS
There is still a little bit of room in the bins so please send in your containers so we can organise the pick up for next week.
PLANT STALL
$172.00 was banked last week. Students have started brainstorming about what they would like to buy for the playground. So far, they are keen to get a couple more Orbit Tennis sets. All ideas are welcome!
An air conditioner will be ordered for the outdoor area. Mr Dagun is painting away and soon we will have lots of storage and a great facility to learn and play.
We had a donation from the Linville Saw Mill of some wood chip. Huge thank you to Ian Shipp and to our wonderful Mr Carey for delivering it for us. The students have been happily shovelling away.
POPCORN/ZOOPER DOOPER ROSTER
With only 3 year 6 students this year, we need everyone to help out on Thursdays. The students have been doing an amazing job.
Together we do great things.
