Principal news

It was heart-warming to see parents and students participating in the opportunity to reflect on progress in Term 1 and set a goal for Term 2. Thank you for demonstrating your appreciation of our work and the success of your children. We have a few catch-ups due to the weather conditions.
We have one COVID positive result from a visitor on Friday. Please check with a COVID test if anyone in the family is feeling unwell. We have had various instances of students unwell for the past 2 weeks. It is a good reminder to be COVID aware, once again.
Our first week back in Term 2 is busy with Cross Country on Wednesday afternoon from 12 noon. This will provide one week before our Cluster Cross Country. On Thursday, we have our school ANZAC Day commemoration run by our student leaders at 2 pm. Please join us for an early pick-up and commemorate the ANZACS with us. We will have an afternoon tea and if you are able to provide a plate to share, this would be much appreciated. Friday is the ANZAC community ceremony at Toogoolawah. Harlin State School always has a great roll up of students and parents. We meet at the Railway Museum at 9 am.
In Term 2, Year 4-6 will participate in Sport on a Friday afternoon at Toogoolawah State School. Students will be provided with the opportunities to participate in various sports with students from Linville, Esk and Toogoolawah. Thanks to Mr Hutchinson and Mr Murdoch for including our Year 4 students. We need a parent to accompany the students each week. If you can help, please let us know. More information to come.
Over the holiday A Block will receive a new teaching wall to provide easier access to both digital and hands on resources. Mr Dagun has been busy making our grounds safe and thanks to David Thallon for organising delivery of the crusher dust to level our paths.
Mrs Blacklock will be in each Friday to support us with our art and craft. We will start with Mother's Day gifts. Parents are welcome to join us from 11.45 am.
Our shade trees have loved the rain and we look forward to good quality shade in a few years. The latest news for our new playground start date is late June, early July! With the recent rain, construction times for Austek have been delayed as they try to finish playgrounds in the flood affected areas.
We hope to have the latest orders from the P&C Gambling Community Grant actioned in the first week back. They will include cubby house/s, round garden beds, a mulcher and the Sphero coding program. Our Lego Robotics is out of date and the Sphero provides the necessary skills of coding and design, without the need for space for storage. An iPad controls the robot. We have Bright Bots for our Year P-2, however I would expect all of the school to be able to use a Sphero once we get started with our upper year levels.
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail bike ride is on the last day of Term 2. This ride caters for all age groups. It is a school event and as such all students are expected to attend. If you have any issues with sourcing a bike, please let me know. Be reminded, a Prep student from Linville was not the last to arrive in 2024! Would you please start the maintenance of bicycles ready for this fabulous day? Grandparents and parents are welcome to ride with us. Linville State School provided a sausage sizzle and afternoon tea on our arrival from Benarkin, which was a lovely way to end the day. We will check if transport is required, as we had lots of parents attend last year.
All the best for a happy and safe Easter break.
Regards
Jo McCormick
Principal and Class Teacher.
Easter Egg Hunt - we beat the birds this time!

Year P - 3 News

Our little guys have been working very hard to finish their fairytales and we have some hilarious changes; Jack and The Skyscraper, The Three Little Wolves, plus a crocodile, coyote and a dingo in place of the Big Bad Wolf. In one story the 3 Little Pigs had to get on a boat, protected by a nasty troll!
In technology, students created a puppet theatre and then designed the puppets and backdrops. We have managed Easter Hats, facts for our dam display and we have been working on turning on the 'e' switch to make short and long vowels. We have added examples to the window louvres. We watched the Wonky Donkey which is a great example of how 'y' is often associated as a vowel. We found the y making an 'i' sound in 'I spy a Rainforest' and making an 'e' sound in 'The Wonky Donkey'.
I think I was the most disappointed with the postponement of the Wivenhoe Dam excursion! We have completed lots of tasks in the study of the dams and the creation of our diorama. We look forward to an opportunity in Term 2, however the availability is extremely low. We will visit as a whole school on Wednesday 4 June.
Next term, we are creating a procedure for our English task. We will start with the procedure for an air pressure rocket. Can you please save any 1.25 L and 2 L soft drink bottles and send to school.
Our home reading is steadily improving but we need students to remember to hand in their folders on a Friday.
Mrs Mac planted easter treats on the fan - and then it was raining chocolate and lollypops! Have a great and safe Easter Break and see you on Tuesday, 22 April.

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

Senior class
Well, hasn’t this term flown by!
This fortnight we’ve been frantically finalising our learning for our Term 1 units. We’ve polished our play scripts. We’ve completed our placement tests for next term’s spelling groups. We’ve dabbled in data and will be formalising our results for the Harlin Hero Shop survey. Let’s see if it leads to real change! In Science, students are preparing a presentation to inform students their age about our study of volcanoes. It has certainly been an explosive unit. Our HASS unit will continue into next term due to unexpected interruptions to our studies this term.
Readers Cup
Six students from our Year 5s and 6s will participate in Readers Cup next term. As we have done previously, we will team up with Linville for this event. Two boys from Linville will join our two Year 6 boys on one team and we will have four girls on another team. The first book has gone home this week. Happy reading!

Technology
Our students have also been advancing their technology skills, although things haven’t always gone smoothly. Once we sort out our microphone issues, students will be able to create screen recordings, which will be a fabulous inclusion for our Science presentations. We’ve also toyed with our Class Notebook in OneNote!
I hope everyone enjoys the break from the school routine. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Term 2!
Ms Fisher

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing

Hi Harlin Family,
We have made it to week 10 and the holidays are now only a day away.
This week I have attached a short piece from Happy School called “Comparison is the thief of Joy”. This is part 1 of a 2-part series.
I will start next term with part 2.
This message is not new but it is good from time to time to revisit old messages. You might notice that you have let go of measuring yourself against others or you might recognise that you have been caught up on social media comparing yourself to others.
Our kids are growing up in a time when we have access to a much wider community though digital technology and the temptation to compare is far greater.
Wishing you all a very happy school break and see you in Term 2
Please feel free to contact me on my work mobile number 0473 679 686 or email jbouc17@eq.edu.au
