Principal news

Even with a short week to start Term 2, our dedicated staff and fabulous students are back into the swing of things, readying for an exciting ten weeks.
Henrietta and Harlan provided a lovely commemoration of our servicemen and women who have fought in the armed services, supported our soldiers or held a peace keeping role. We had a good roll up for the ANZAC Service at Toogoolawah that was 30 minutes in duration. I have suggested that the RSL might consider an earlier start in future. Our student conduct at both events was exemplary.
Beautiful clear skies greeted us for Cross Country last Wednesday. We had a full roll up of students who demonstrated the importance of attending and supporting your house team. The Roos won the house shield with 43 points. Dingoes had 30 points. Harlin SS won the Overall Points Trophy and Linville SS won the Aggregate Points Trophy. Congratulations to Sam, Cleo, Eithan, Bella, Alex and Charlie who represented Harlin SS at the Brisbane Valley Cluster Schools Cross Country today. It is not an easy track, with a gentle but challenging rise out the back. Thanks to parents for your support.
Today a Reader, tomorrow a leader. Please come to parade each week as we have community members and parents lined up to talk about the importance of reading. Mr Smith was on parade today and talked to students about the importance of reading, as a driver and as the leader of 'Smiths Transport.' Mrs Katie Buckley, owner of Katie Buckley Graphic Design will be our guest next week.
All students will be attending the Wivenhoe Dam Excursion on Wednesday 4 June. Parents and younger siblings are welcome. Please let me know if you can attend and can provide private transport. It would be much appreciated.
Today, we started Athletics practise with High Jump, Long Jump and Shot put. There will be lots of opportunities to sharpen our skills ready for our Athletics Carnival on Thursday, 26 June at Linville SS.
Students from the Steiner School will be camping overnight on the 12 and 13th of May as part of their annual BVRT ride. They are usually here and gone before our students arrive or leave.
Our BVRT bike ride is on the last day of this term. I have heard some of our students have spent the Easter Break learning how to ride a bike or practising on the Trail. Great news. Parents, grandparents, friends and younger siblings are welcome. There is a change to our route, with our start now at Toogoolawah and back to Harlin. This route is very easy with the added bonus of the tunnel. We will have an adult on the cattle grids.
Don't forget the Queensland State Schools eBooks Digital Library. It has is a collection of eBooks, audiobooks and read-along eBooks for students. SORA provides resources to help support learning and foster a lifelong love of reading. See the flyer below for free access. If you need more detailed instructions and your child's login, please ask.
Have another great long weekend! See you on Tuesday.
Regards
Jo McCormick

Next week it is Katie Buckley, award winning Graphic Designer, and instigator of all notes, letterheads, flyers, and other graphics at Harlin SS.

Year P - 3 News

This term our English focus is procedure. We have bottle rockets, bread making, honey joys and chocolate crackles ready to 'pique' the interest of our students. The language features and text structure of procedures will dominate our classroom displays and our rocket. This week we followed a procedure requiring the reading of instructions to make a parachute. Ever tried to follow instructions from IKEA or TEMU? Images play a very important role in helping to make the product. Chocolate Crackles on Tuesday and Rockets on Wednesday! Don't forget your empty soft drink bottle.
This term we are encouraging greater responsibility for learning and in particular searching the many places in our room to find spelling help. This also extends to bringing in the reader to the classroom, remembering a hat and being ready to learn.
In maths, we aim to have mapping finished mid-week ready to engage with Measurement. We found a chocolate bunny in our treasure chest by using 'paces' to follow directions.
Help please. We need the following for our next P-6 Arts project. If you can help, it would be much appreciated.
- Small crockery items like cups, saucers, plates, bowls, small vases, small glass jars (any of these in odd shapes are great too!) - no plastic items and nothing too big
- Old reading glasses
- Thick beaded necklaces
- Old nuts and bolts, washers etc (mixed sizes and shapes
In HASS, we are now focusing on the history of our area. We know that history is about the past and we have a collection of old domestic kitchen implements, plus an original slate for writing. If you have any items you would like to share with us, please come in and have a chat.
Remember: parents and grandparents are welcome in our classroom. Help is always appreciated.
Science
This term our younger students will be investigating mixtures. We’ve kicked off by creating a mixture of:
- flour
- salt
- cream of tartar
- oil
- boiling water
- food colouring
When shown the ingredients, students’ predictions about what the mixture would end up being included cupcakes, slime and playdough. Playdough was the winner. In a fun quiz, students were surprised to learn that erasers – often called rubbers – are not made from rubber at all. In fact, they used to be made from bread!

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

In Science this term we are investigating reversible and irreversible changes. Students observed a number of substances that had been changed and categorised their initial thoughts about which changes could be reversed.
Science

We will use our English time to learn how to write science reports, including investigations. Part of this will involve a procedure. Students had some fun this week writing instructions for making a sandwich!
English

Our Maths is focused on multiplication facts and mental maths strategies. This fortnight we have grappled with a fiendish puzzle, and learnt about the split strategy (aka Humpty Dumpty strategy) for adding and subtracting two-digit and three-digit numbers. We are practising our mental maths by playing a number game. This week Cleo and Henrietta persevered to an exact result!

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing

Hi Harlin Family,
This term I am going to focus on Behaviour as Communication
I will put a snippet of information in each newsletter along with a visual to expand on the information.
Today’s piece is about the iceberg metaphor. First let’s think about an iceberg in the sea, much of an iceberg is below the water's surface, this has led to the expression "tip of the iceberg" to illustrate a small part of a larger unseen issue. Icebergs are considered a serious maritime hazard.
So, like the iceberg in the sea, behaviour icebergs can be a parenting hazard.
What am I talking about, well sometimes the behaviour your child is displaying may be their way of communicating something else. What you see may not be what they are saying.
Usually, our initial reaction is to respond to the behaviour and this can lead straight to a consequence or straight to talking about the behaviour. The iceberg metaphor reminds us to step back and ask what is my child’s need behind the behaviour.
