Principal news

As athletics and our bike ride approaches, we are looking for great weather as we count down to the end of term. Students and staff are busy completing assessment tasks for reporting in Week 10.
Due to our bike ride, the last Parade for term will be Thursday 26 June at 2.45 pm. Term 2 attendance awards will be presented.
Our students received some wonderful kudos from Daniel at the Wivenhoe Dam excursion last Wednesday; "Thanks for the heads-up and for your kind feedback. We really enjoyed hosting your students – they were engaged, respectful, and a pleasure to have on site." I know staff and parents expect the very best, but it's lovely to hear our school commended for positive student behaviour. It was also a bit of a milestone in regard to excursions - every student was in attendance. Fabulous!
Congratulations to the P&C for their recent teamwork in providing great tucker at the Cattleman's Canteen. It was great to see so many parents volunteering once more and sharing the load. Also, thanks to grandparents who also helped or provided baked goods. You are a valuable part of our school community. Thank you to parents who made sure our instrumental band students attended the show performance. This was a great opportunity for students to perform in front of an audience.
And talking of instrumental music, you are invited to hear Sunshine Beach State High School Performing Arts on the last Monday of term, 23 June at 10.15 am. 78 students from Year 7-12 will create a spectacular event with multiple performances including their string band and their choir. Please join us.
Over the holidays we hope to have our garden re-fenced by Mr Blackmore. The fencing will keep out the little critters and give our 'bigger critters' easy access for planting and harvesting.
We have heaps of storage in the OLC (Outdoor Learning Centre) with the recent installation of cupboards. The Student Council are enjoying a designated area for their Thursday treats. This was all enabled by the successful P&C grant of 2025.
Please make sure warm clothing is labelled with your child's name. We have several black jumpers already waiting to be claimed.
Remember, bikes must come to school for practise and a safety check on Monday 23 June. This is a requirement of our Risk Assessment. We will lots of activities on the oval to practise protocols on the BVRT and safe riding techniques. We also have two police officers from the QLD Police Bike Squad who will be attending the ride.
On Monday, we have invited students to dress as old fashioned as they can as part of our history unit. A note was sent home on Tuesday. Today, we had a go at typing from an old Remington Typewriter for our phonics. Amazing how intrigued the kids were with the workings of the old machine.
Congratulations to students who entered both school and personal items in The Show. The judges were impressed by the quality of the art entries. The Show relies on the support of the community.
A huge thanks to Jon and his team at the Esk Community Shop who have donated $2000 to the P&C for more projects. We are very grateful for the continued support from this dynamic team who raise an incredible amount of money for the Brisbane Valley schools and community organisations.
Have a great weekend

Wivenhoe Dam Excursion
Wivenhoe Dam excursion
Last Wednesday Harlin students enjoyed a fun and informative day at Wivenhoe Dam. They worked as water scientists at Cormorant Park, performing different tests to assess oxygen levels, temperature, and turbidity. Students also collected bug samples to perform a macro invertebrate analysis to determine how clean the water was.
We ventured over to view the radial gates which, while not open, were still impressive. Daniel and Rachel shared fascinating information about the operation and history of the dam.
The final activity for the day was a hydrostatic test which demonstrated the force of water on the dam wall.
Daniel was impressed by the engagement and behaviour of our students which was heartening.
Thank you to the parents and staff who drove our students to the dam to enjoy this activity.

Year P - 3 News

We have been full steam ahead with writing our procedure. Getting the steps correct and accurate is really making our brains work overtime. We have used laptops to print the procedures. We have lots of different items from putty to a fridge magnet.
The Worm Wee is providing opportunities for responsibility and we have sold most of our first batch. 6 x $3 for the Student Council!
In maths we are transferring 'number and algebra' knowledge by using money. Shopping provides opportunities for 'change' and various problem-solving activities. The P-2 class have been making amounts in various ways and then shopping in our Blends Shop. Each day we have a shop where all the items are a particular amount. What a great shop! The shopkeeper decides on how the customer must present their money.
P-3 Science
Photo fail by Ms Fisher this fortnight. We are in assessment mode. Archie and Bodhi have analysed muesli and playdough, while the Year 2s and 3s have started an investigation into mixtures of powered paint with water, with egg yolk, with PVA glue and with cooking oil. Next week, they will perform a “smudge test” and a “water fastness” test to see which mixture fits different purposes.

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

Term 2, Week 8
This past fortnight has been so busy, Ms Fisher has forgotten to take photos – but we do have a few to share.
In preparation for their Maths assessment on Time, our Year 6s developed an itinerary for astronauts on the International Space Station.
Maths 4-6

Students are now fiddling with finances to improve their budgeting skills before their final Maths assessment next week. They were super-engaged in a class conversation about government budgets, household budgets, income and taxes which was fabulous. Financial literacy is one of the most important Maths skills our little humans need to develop.
Our Science/English is at the pointy end now. We have investigated the rate of dissolving for a denture tablet when one variable is changed. Students were surprised how long one of those tablets took to dissolve, and how the classroom then smelled like a dentist surgery…
Science 4-6

Students are now writing up their reports for their English assessment.
We are still tracking our reading hours. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in students’ folders next week!

Instrumental Music Update
Wow! What a performance on Saturday at the Toogoolawah Show!
Harlin State School students joined together with students from Toogoolawah State School, Esk State School, Linville State School and Toogoolawah State High School to create a Super Band with more than 70 students! We banded together to perform Raiders March (by John Williams) and Chilli Bean (by Mr Smith) and the sheer power of our five combined schools was awesome to hear! After those two pieces, the Senior Bands combined to perform Muster Time (by Mr Smith).
Thank you to Mrs Smith for taking the photos while Mr Smith and I were supporting our students. If you have any photos of the performance where Harlin SS students are more visible and you are happy to share them, please send me a copy to cgrah65@eq.edu.au. I would love to share them in the next newsletter.
The performance was an exciting time for all concerned, and I can’t wait for our next one, which will be the Primary School’s tour on Thursday, Sept 18, 2025. We will travel to Toogoolawah State School, to watch a performance from Toogoolawah State High School, and to perform again with the Super Band!

Jill Boucher - Wellbeing

Hi Harlin Family,
This term I am going to focus on Behaviour as Communication
I will put a snippet of information in each newsletter along with a visual to expand on the information.
As promised in the last newsletter today I have included a visual of “Reframe the Behaviour” I am hoping this visual offers you an alternative option from Won’t to Can’t YET!
The underlying premise is that kids do well when they can. This visual shows how we can be our child best supporter. Sometimes we need to shift our perspective - if we see our child differently, we see a different child.
If you want to know more feel free to contact me on my work mobile number 0473 679 686 or email jbouc17@eq.edu.au

There will be some amazing organic veggies for sale soon.
POPCORN/JELLY AND CUSTARD

Somerset Rail Trail Classic
Subject: Free entry ticket offer – 22nd annual Somerset Rail Trail Classic
The annual Somerset Rail Trail Classic is back!
An initiative of the Somerset Regional Council, this event takes place on Australia’s longest recreational rail trail on Sunday, 13 July 2025. The event is about sharing an active and healthy lifestyle with family and friends and enjoying the best the Somerset region has to offer. This year, the SRTC is supporting the Lowood and Tarampa Stags District Rugby League Club and the Brisbane Valley Soccer Club as the 2025 event beneficiaries.
With the support of our generous sponsors, including A&M Civil Contracting, we are pleased to be able to offer your students and families 10 free entries to this exciting event. This could be the perfect opportunity to encourage reluctant or budding sports heroes or as a prize in an active and healthy school competition. How your school wishes to distribute the vouchers to your students and families is up to you.
To take advantage of this offer, each of your 10 participants would simply need to register via our online portal and enter their school discount code HAR25. Participants can choose to take part in either the 8km or 3km run / walk events or a 44km or 20km bike ride along the trail to the festivities at the Fernvale Sports Park.
Please note, children under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
If you have any questions or concerns relating to this offer, please feel free to contact me via return email. You can also phone Council on (07) 5425 4000 or head to somersetrailtrailclassic.com.au.
