Principal news

As we wind down for the winter break it is great to reflect on our school community achievements this term.
We have had Cross Country both at school and our qualifiers attend TSHS for our Cluster competition. Mrs Blacklock helped us create a lovely Mothers' Day craft for our special mums. We had our trip to Wivenhoe in week seven and the whole school received some useful information on one of our local areas of importance. Wonderful feedback about excellent student behaviour was received. Our parents raised funds once more at the Toogoolawah Show by operating the Cattleman's Canteen. A bigger group of parent helpers this year have developed a strong bond. The teamwork is doing amazing things, considering the size of our school. A History Dat saw the typewriter come up trumps. Knuckles and hopscotch proved tricky. Students represented Harlin State School at Readers Cup. We had a fabulous day at Linville State School for our athletics carnival and well done, Dingoes. The Performing Arts Band from Sunshine State High School called in and hopefully have encouraged students to practise their instruments and younger students to consider an instrument in Year 4. Year 5 & 6 students participated in the Puberty Program and were very mature in their conduct. Finally, our school community was able to participate in the Bike Ride on the BVRT and place thumbprints on the mural which will adorn the shed at the Harlin Siding. Congratulations to Jenny from Manamana Dreaming who has spent many hours representing the rail trail, our school, and the fauna and flora of our community, in the mural. We are so lucky to have this facility on our doorstep. Thanks to parents, community members and students for a momentous day, a tasty barbeque, and a united end to the term.
Paul Heymans from the BVRT instigated the thumbprints for the mural. Thank you to Paul for inviting our students and community to make an impression on the Harlin Siding Shed. Thanks to Katie Buckley we will no doubt ensure a spectacular write up in the Sentinel. It was lovely to see the Somerset Council represented with several Councillors, Mayor Wendt and representatives from the BVRT. Thank you for adding to the importance of this event within our community.
Nine students achieved 95% or more of attendance in Term 2. There would have been a few more students but an annoying virus halted a couple of usual 95-100% attendees. Next term! Our attendance goal for every student is 95% or above. Remember, Every Day Counts!
Our parent/staff pack up is outstanding. There was a tremendous example, set at the Linville SS Athletics carnival, where several parents and grandparent jumped in to pack up before the presentation of medals, for not only Harlin SS but for Linville SS too. Students then set about finding some way of helping to pack up our tarps, equipment and their belongings. This routine sets am example for our students, in particular, our young men.
The playground is set for a start on August 11, and I am pushing for a finish in November. The community has waited a long time for this playground, and we want to use it before the end of the school year.
Our staff deserve a well-earned break, and I thank them once again for all the 'extras' that they bring to our school. Harlin SS is Harlin SS because of the support and actions of our staff.
We farewelled Mr Matt, Ms Mel, and Jill Boucher this week. We may see Matt back when we need a relief T/A, Ms Mel will be taking on her own class full-time, and Jill has reduced her number of days working in Term 3. Good luck and thank you.
Have a safe and pleasant holiday break. Enjoy our many photos!
Regards

Year P - 3 News

Students finished assessment this week and have had a chance to read or be read the feedback. This will assist us to write goals for Term 3.
We made a BVRT model and added some bikes made from pipe-cleaners. We talked about the history of this trail. Today, Mac and Nate saw first-hand more history of our local area when we stopped at the Milk Train Bridge.
We had 8 practise sessions on our bikes this week in preparation for today's bike ride. I'm hoping our little ones get lots of rest over the holidays, ready to consolidate and immerse in new learning for Term 3.
Looking forward to tall tales in Week 1 of Term 3.
Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

Senior class Term 2, Week 10
The last two weeks have flown by in a whirl of assessment! Students have persevered with tasks which has been great to see.
Our final task this term has been for Technology where students have been programming in Scratch. Students have created two types of guessing games, one game with ‘yes/no’ answers and the other generated random number facts. They have enjoyed creating the different screens and inserting sound effects. Debugging wasn’t quite as much fun but the end result was worth it!
Scratch

I hope everyone has a relaxing break and is looking forward to starting fresh next term for more learning!
Ms Fisher
PS For anyone who does reading over the holidays, I am happy to look at Reading Folders the first Monday back and award Harlin Heroes!

Jill Boucher - Student Wellbeing
Hi Harlin Family,
I can’t believe it is week 10 where did term 2 go? I hope you are all looking forward to the school holidays whether is it a staycation or vacation.
This is my last piece for the Harlin newsletter this term and for the rest of this year as I am reducing my hours. I wish all the families well and hope you have a fantastic 2025.
My last message on Behaviour as Communication is very simple and I have attached a poster with this simple message.
Changing our perspective is hard. I grew up in an era where behaviour and communication where not connected. When I misbehaved, I didn’t think oh I’m trying to communicate something, and my parents didn’t ask are you trying to tell us something.
Today there has been a shift to asking our children curious questions and finding out what lies beneath the behaviour.
Whilst I won’t be at Harlin school for the rest of this year if you have questions about this newsletter piece please call or email me on my work mobile number 0473 679 686 or email jbouc17@eq.edu.au
I want to thank Harlin school and all that work there for their welcoming culture and for including me as part of the family.

What a great fundraising half year we have had. Plants $4763.10
Popcorn/Jelly /ZDs $ 481.20
We purchased $1265.13 worth of goodies from HART Sports. Until we get somewhere (like a new shed) to keep things, we will have to hold off purchasing anything that needs to be stored.
We had a lovely donation of containers from the Peters family. Marianne Horn also brought some more plants for us to sell on our stall.
Containers will be picked up tomorrow leaving the bins ready for term 3.
The veggie garden is coming along. Mr Blackmore has made some shelving for the outside of the shed and both Mr and Mrs Blackmore will be refencing and digging out the weeds in the main veggie patch. Huge THANK YOU for all that you do.
POPCORN/JELLY AND CUSTARD
Popcorn and jelly were free this week as a big thank you for supporting our fundraising days.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy break. See you in two weeks.
Harlan, Henrietta, Blake and Mrs Philp
THANK YOU!

Sunshine Beach SHS Music Tour
Monday 23 June 10.15 am to 11 am
The band and choir enthralled us with some amazing music. It was a great experience for our students to see how (with a lot of practice) fantastic instruments can sound and of course how beautiful being part of a choir can be.
Huge THANK YOU to the Sunshine Beach band for coming to our small school and sharing your amazing talent with us.

Amazing Talent

EMBRACE THE WILD!
Roots & Shoots Family
Event Invitation
It is our pleasure at the Jane Goodall Institute Australia, to invite Queensland Museum Cobb+Co to
participate in a family-friendly, interactive community event called, Embrace the Wild!
This program invites children, youth, and families to learn about, how to care for their local
wildlife, use citizen science skills and build habitat for the insects and animals in their area.
Jane Goodall Institute Australia (JGIA) Queensland Coordinator Debbie Tanzer, and JGIA Australia Programs Coordinator Ben Howes will facilitate this engaging morning event. We have an Embrace the Wild Resource Kit prepared ahead of time that outlines all the key activities, and we will send this to you ahead of time.
The purpose of this event is to connect children, youth and families with nature and the opportunity to learn skills to identify wildlife in their area by using citizen science skills and to build habitat for local species (i.e. native seed balls and frog hotels). After Dr. Jane Goodall’s most recent Australian tour, she
identified Queensland as a state with the potential to invest deeply in community conservation
efforts, and we are delighted for an opportunity to partner with Queensland Museum Cobb+Co.
The Embrace the Wild event will be:
- A free event, with all resources and event facilitation costs covered by JGIA funding
- A chance for local children, youth & families to build new friendships & share learning
- A chance for the Roots & Shoots network to support the work of Queensland Museum Cobb+Co in building awareness and caring for our natural environment

Somerset Rail Trail Classic
Subject: Free entry ticket offer – 22nd annual Somerset Rail Trail Classic
The annual Somerset Rail Trail Classic is back!
An initiative of the Somerset Regional Council, this event takes place on Australia’s longest recreational rail trail on Sunday, 13 July 2025. The event is about sharing an active and healthy lifestyle with family and friends and enjoying the best the Somerset region has to offer. This year, the SRTC is supporting the Lowood and Tarampa Stags District Rugby League Club and the Brisbane Valley Soccer Club as the 2025 event beneficiaries.
With the support of our generous sponsors, including A&M Civil Contracting, we are pleased to be able to offer your students and families 10 free entries to this exciting event. This could be the perfect opportunity to encourage reluctant or budding sports heroes or as a prize in an active and healthy school competition. How your school wishes to distribute the vouchers to your students and families is up to you.
To take advantage of this offer, each of your 10 participants would simply need to register via our online portal and enter their school discount code HAR25. Participants can choose to take part in either the 8km or 3km run / walk events or a 44km or 20km bike ride along the trail to the festivities at the Fernvale Sports Park.
Please note, children under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
If you have any questions or concerns relating to this offer, please feel free to contact me via return email. You can also phone Council on (07) 5425 4000 or head to somersetrailtrailclassic.com.au.
