Principal news

Congratulations to our Cluster Athletics Competitors who competed yesterday. I was overly impressed with the students who competed in the first event of the day, the 800 metres. It is not an easy race and the competition was quick. All our students ran the whole race and gave their absolute best effort. Furthermore, it was pleasing to see students using correct technique and trying their very best in both the field and the track events. Once more, behaviour was exemplary. Thank you to parents and grandparents who were able to attend and support our athletes. We have Alex, Bella, Eithan, and Henrietta who have qualified for the Gatton Zone Athletics on Friday, 15 August. Best of luck.
Students in Year 3 & 5 received NAPLAN test results this week. Ms Fisher and I are tabling the results for celebration and further teaching of concepts required.
Book Week is Monday 18 of August. Our theme for dress up is 'Fantasy' which links to our English study this term. The parade will be at 9 am so parents can join in the celebration. Students chose a book in Week 1 for some ideas which links to the 'Fantasy' theme.
We are practising for the Ball Games carnival at each second break. We have made some huge improvements in only two weeks. We have spoken about the expectation of dedicating time for the team and giving up play time to ensure our team knows how to play the games and then on the day, we do the best we can. Our PBL is linked to 'Teamwork." This year, due to Year 4-6 sports on a Friday afternoon, the Ball Games carnival moved to Wednesday and will start at 11.30 am. It will be a little quicker than last year with a short break. Parents and family members are welcome.
Mrs. Pennicott will visit each Tuesday to teach our students line-dancing during their PE session. This is a change from our usual Bush Dance but will be equally entertaining. I look forward to seeing our 'semi-professional mature line dancers' slide, shuffle, and hustle at the end of term celebration at the Moore Hall.
We wish Dr T. all the best on the Sunshine Coast as she takes on a new role in the hospital sector. We have had some lovely stories about our student's use of AUSLAN in the community and hope we have the opportunity for AUSLAN next year.
Art has moved to Thursday with music, in the morning session. On Friday, we are rotating between technology (Spheros) and gardening. If you are available to help in the garden from 11.45 to 1.15 pm your help will be much appreciated. Come and have a look at our permaculture garden. The fence has been pulled down and we love the access, so have decided not to replace it at this time.
I want to thank Bill and Norma Dale who have kindly donated funds to finish the Outdoor Learning Area. The donation has allowed us to complete plumbing and epoxy coat the floor for a hygienic finish. To Norma and Bill, on behalf of Harlin State School, thank you for your support.
There is a very topical image hiding in the newsletter. I am looking forward to the first student emailing me with a description of the image and a comment on an item in the Newsletter. There is a prize beckoning.
Have a safe and relaxing weekend.
Regards,
Jo McCormick
Principal and Class Teacher

Year P - 3 News

Beware - danger ahead! Dragons, dungeons, castles, realms, tricks, guardians, fire and wings are a daily occurrence in our classroom at the moment. Students are investigating parts of speech and how we can use these to create entertaining stories. Kumiko and The Dragon is our book study and is the retell of a Japanese grandmother's story.
Shapes and objects have been our focus for maths. Students have investigated how to describe 2 dimensional shapes and 3 dimensional objects. They have found parallel lines in our playground and made parallelograms. Students have made 3 dimensional objects from toothpicks and playdoh and traced the nets that create prisms and pyramids. They have blown hemispheres with bubble mixture (Dragon Spit!) It's all about faces, bases, vertices, perhaps an apex, and edges.
In Health, we are investigating the hard to read and sometimes misleading ingredients on the packaging of the food in lunchboxes. Students are recognising why packet foods taste so good and are so enticing. We are discussing brain food as opposed to packet foods, which have a short burst of energy. Students have also looked at how acid breaks down the enamel on teeth to cause decay.
HASS is all about our major rivers, the Channel Country and how floods can change our very barren inland to a sea of green. We have watched the transformation on Lake Eyre this year into a haven for birds of many species.
Reading each night continues to be our school and class expectation. It is pleasing to see small improvements in our reading that will only improve with more opportunities to read to an older listener. I look forward to lots of stickers this term. Thank you, parents for continuing our push to see every student a better reader, day by day.

P-3 Science
Our younger students will be investigating forces this term. Last week students viewed a video on Caine’s Arcade and hunted for toys and games in the classroom that involved forces. Using their knowledge of forces, students will create their own arcade game! At any time during the term, if you have cardboard boxes you want to be rid of, please send them in. We would greatly appreciate it!

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

Senior class
Our English unit on Rowan of Rin is in full swing. The fantasy genre is new to some students, which is exciting. Students are analysing the language features and text structures that authors use to create an engaging story with the goal of writing their own short fantasy story.
Maths is all about fractions, as well as multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10. Students are investigating different ways of identifying equivalent fractions – with fractions strips and circles, with number lines, and by multiplying or dividing numerators and denominators. They are using their knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10s to convert units of measurement.
Maths

Science is electrifying! So far in our unit, students have investigated types of energy and how electrical energy is generated. We are having a tough time accepting that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed.
Science

Our HASS unit this semester looks at exploration of Australia, river systems, and the diverse communities our land creates. This week we identified some of Australia’s major rivers using atlases.

Our new Reading Chart is up! Alex has a strong lead as he read over the holidays. Reading folders are due every Monday. I can’t wait to see all the new stars added each week!
