Principal news

Dear School Community,
This week, we celebrated our incredible staff, who consistently go above and beyond to make Harlin State School a special place. We acknowledge the care and dedication they demonstrate every day – through their planning, their engagement with parents and the community, and their commitment to creating engaging learning experiences. We are fortunate to have a supportive P&C and parent body who recognise these efforts. Today, Katie, Lisa, and Emily represented our parent and community group by joining us for a thank-you afternoon tea with the team.
Congratulations to Bella, Alex, Eithan, Harlan, and Henrietta, who proudly represented the Brisbane Valley Small Schools Cluster last Friday. Brisbane Valley won both the Aggregate and Overall track events. A special congratulations to Kacey Carey, who has qualified for the Regional competition in Toowoomba, where she will compete in Shot Put. Well done, Kacey! Thank you again to parents who made the trek for one or more events. It is a huge commitment but with all students attending, there was a great result.
Book Week is always a highlight – especially for the students – and supports our focus on reading as a top priority for student success. Congratulations to all the parents who managed to create or find costumes to bring the fantasy theme to life. A special shoutout to Sam and Hugh for your winning costumes!
Last week, Katie, Ash-Lee, and I held a start-up meeting with the playground contractors to review safety fencing, the location of vehicles, and the movement of machinery around the site. A pipe and services test was completed today, and construction will begin on Monday – exciting news! Please note that this area will be off-limits for several weeks. Students will have supervised opportunities to observe the machinery at work from the house yard. We’ll also use the oval on Mondays and Wednesdays if it is safe to do so.
Please remember to complete the School Opinion Survey. It will take about ten minutes and provides a means to improve our policy and processes. Your support would be much appreciated.
Have a safe and relaxing weekend.
Warm regards,
Jo McCormick

Mrs Carey for organising Book Week display and purchasing resources.
Mrs Blacklock, Mrs Britton and Kirralee for helping us with our Father's Day craft.
Mr Glover for organising the incubator (automatic, which means no more chick-sitting on the weekends!) to hatch chickens. We mark the days as we countdown to the 'big hatching!'
Thank you, Mrs Blackmore for helping our students learn in the garden.
Mrs Carey and Mrs Putland (Eliza's nana) for transporting students to sport today.
Thank you, Mr Blackmore, for making a potting table.

Year P - 3 News

In English, Year 3 students are beginning to plan and write their own narratives this week. They’ll be aiming to use literary devices to create engaging and imaginative stories. Meanwhile, Prep–Year 2 students have just wrapped up writing a narrative with some scaffolding (a little help!), and they’ll soon be having a go at writing their own independently. We can’t wait to see their creativity shine!
We had a fascinating time exploring the sugar content in our lunchboxes. Students have become experts at spotting hidden names for sugar — a great step toward making healthier food choices!
In Maths, students now confidently understand the difference between volume and capacity. Year 3 are using known quantities that they then use as a benchmark to measure unknown ones — though they’ve learned to be careful, especially with all the water involved… particularly when Nate is nearby!
Prep–2 students have been choosing the best tools to measure objects in centimetres or metres. Archie even brought maths and literacy together by telling addition and subtraction stories using his favourite nursery rhyme — a great way to bring learning to life!
In HASS we looked at photos of the "Channel Country' and Leo quite rightly exclaimed; 'It looks like a brain!'
Finally, thanks to Mr Glover, the incubator is up and running! We’re all looking forward to learning about the life cycle of chickens and watching the eggs hatch over the coming weeks — an egg-citing time ahead!
Egg-citing times!

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

Senior class Term 3, Week 6
The senior class has completed their quest to read Rowan of Rin for English! Students thoroughly enjoyed the ending. They have completed their reading assessment on this text and are moving on to writing a short fantasy story. As we are aiming to be PLOTTERS, not PANSTERS, students have drafted a story from a plan! Good stories only come from a solid plan. Our focus this week has been on a sizzling start.
Maths has revolved around our Smartie Pants investigations. Using a box of Smarties, students are investigating different maths concepts. This week we have focussed on number (division and percentages) as well as measurement (length). Students have measured and calculated how many Smartie boxes will fit across the length of a desk, the width of a desk, and even the length of the classroom! We are also dealing with angles as part of our measurement unit.
Maths 4-6

Science has really sparked the students’ curiosity. We have drawn diagrams of simple circuits using symbols, and this week we made our own switches out of pegs and aluminium foil. We are working towards designing a security system.
Science 4-6

This week in HASS, students learnt about mapping conventions for rainfall maps. They learnt about the acronym BOLTSS – Border, Orientation, Legend, Title, Source and Scale. We investigated how rainfall is different across this vast continent.
Our Book Week costumes were amazing! We did have to implement an unusual safety protocol with all the fairy wings flapping about…

Reading folders are due every Monday. Geronimo is sad when they don’t come in. 🐿️☹
