Term 3 Week 8 2023
Principal's Report
Students are experiencing lots of opportunities to extend their thinking, consolidate concepts and participate in the joy of learning.
It was fabulous to see a majority of Senior Citizens in the cast peforming 'Wake Up, Mia.' Old and treasured nursery rhyme characters appeared amongst lots of singing. The Zoo and Japanese Garden was an added bonus.
This week we celebrate our wonderful support staff. In our last newsletter, I mentioned how lucky we are to have staff who go well beyond their roles and reponsibilities, to provide a caring and engaging environment for your children. Thanks again to Mrs Enks, Carey, Carroll, Philp, Miss Melinda, Ms Katrina, Mr Ken and Mr Maller.
We have staff taking leave for various reasons. I will be having a knee operation in Week 9 and will return in Term 4. Mr Nigel Davidson will be Acting Principal for the 2 weeks. Mr Davidson has done various acting roles, teaches Year 5-6 at present, and has also led student support at Kuraby State School. Mrs Philp will be overseas in Denmark catching up with family, and Mrs Packenham will also be on leave in Term 4. We welcome Mrs Sharon Cowley to P-2 for the first 2 weeks of Term 4. Miss Mel will cover Mrs Philp's leave.
Students will visit Somerset Civic Centre for the performance 'FIZZ', presented by Opera Qld. this Wednesday. The Somerset Council is being proactive in providing opportunities in the Arts for students of the region. This performance ties in nicley with our drama unit this term. We will support these endeavours when they correlate with our curriculum.
Looking forward to catching you all at the Bush Dance this Thursday. Even our P-2's can do the 'Waves of Bondi!' Students will be performing dances learnt with Mrs Mac and Mr Dennison in PE. Volunteers from the P&C are providing a BBQ dinner. Orders and money are due today, Monday 28 August.
Remember, the following day Friday 1 September, is a Pupil Free Day. Staff will be particiating in First Aid, Heggary Phonemic Awareness, The Magic Caterpillar Handwriting, moderation tasks with Linville SS and planning for the remainder of the term.
Best wishes to Brax Bechly, representing Harlin SS at Regional Athletics, in Bundaberg this Wednesday. Thanks Alan and Lisa for your support in providing this opportunity for Brax.
As always, please stay up to date with our date claimers below.
Yours sincerely

Prep - 2 News Mrs Packenham
What a huge fortnight we have had! Here are the standout activities:
On Thursday of Week 6 we celebrated National Science Week. We looked at innovations that are part of our everyday lives such as bikes, trains, telescopes, pens and even ice-cream and watched videos on technology innovations used in some farms. Students then designed farming technology to help the farmer in the story ‘The Enormous Turnip’.
Friday of Week 6 was Bullying – No Way! Day. The theme this year was ‘growing connections’. The Prep-2 students discussed the connections they have with family, friends, school community and others and how that positively impacts their life. Students created a connections chain to represent how we are connected to others.
On Tuesday of Week 7 we went on an excursion to the Incinerator Theatre at Ipswich, where we greatly enjoyed watching ‘Go to sleep Mia’. There were many familiar characters such as Captain Hook, Tigger, the Gingerbread Man, Goldilocks and Snow White. After the show we ate lunch in the park, visited the Nature Centre (free zoo) and wandered through the Japanese gardens. It was an excellent day out and, like usual, the students were exceptionally behaved!
On Wednesday of Week 6 we celebrated Book Week with a fun dress up parade, a visit to Book Fair, designed new front covers of books and created our own books. This week we have had a cosy reading corner set up. It has received lots of use!
Go to Sleep, Mia.

Year 3-6 News Ms Fisher
T3, W8 Senior class
Our 3s and 4s have continued their work with friction in Science, completing an investigation for their Tracks, Trays and Trucks portfolio. They will now apply what they’ve learned to improve the design of their balloon-powered cars – testing each design change scientifically!
5s and 6s have studied how electricity is generated, now they are investigating how it flows through circuits. They have built circuits with batteries, bulb, buzzers and switches and even drawn their circuits using recognised symbols for each component. Students enjoyed testing different materials – coins, plastic, wood, aluminium foil, rubber, pencil lead, springs, glass – to see which are conductors and which are insulators.
In English, most students have now completed their information report on their chosen vehicle as well as their newspaper report on the day HLE Smith & Co, Karreman Quarries, and the Caboolture Car Club visited!

Instrumental - Mr Adam Smith
“Instrumental video performance assessments are underway over the next few weeks for Term 3 solo and sight-reading elements of the Instrumental Music Curriculum. Our Year 6’s are levelling up rapidly.
Our new Instrumental Music folders are looking fabulous and doing a great job protecting our sheet music and making us look even more professional.
Make sure your forms are back in for our September 14 bus trip to Toogoolawah to perform in the combined mega-band.”
PBL Week 8 & 9
As our term comes to an end we need to be resilient with our assessment tasks. This fortnight we will discuss a growth mindset vs. a closed mindset. A growth mindset encourages us to see difficulties as a challenge and a way to improve. It remnds us that we can improve over time and when we are willing to be resilient when challenged.
Thanks

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
We had 4 full bins collected week 5. Thank you, Steele, Tayte and our super keen Alex. Next collection will be week 9.
PLANT STALL
Now that spring is here, we are starting to see our potted plants grow. The boys did a great job painting the new slats that were donated by Ian Shipp from the Linville saw mill. Hopefully, we can keep the stand looking full and colourful. Ian has also donated a load of pine chip for our gardens. A huge thank you to Krys Carey for driving it to school for us.
VEGETABLE GARDEN
A massive thank you must go to Wayne Davis from Linville who came and spent an afternoon rotary hoeing our veggie patch. Ollie and Tayte took multiple loads of soil in from the pile and dug it ready for the beautiful veggies that are now ready to be planted.
Of course, Mrs Blackmore is wonderful helping each week. She has brought new seeds, seedlings and fertilizer for the permaculture garden.
FUN DAY
We will be having a free dress day on the 13th of September.
