Principal news

We send our heartfelt condolences to our families grieving the loss of their beloved Uncle Kev. He will be fondly remembered for his genuine support of his nieces and nephews who attend—or have attended—Harlan State School. Kevin was a cherished member of our school community, always willing to support our students and their activities.
Our thoughts are with Rick and Trish, Lisa and Al, Katrina and Rob, and Brax, Bella, Cleo, and Charlie during this difficult time.
We have a big last week of term coming up. A catch-up Line Dancing lesson on Tuesday 16th. Ball games on Wednesday 17th, here at Harlin. Band students to TSS on Thursday 18th. Parade on Thursday 18 at 2.45 pm with presentations for attendance. Our Line Dancing and barbeque is also on Thursday 18th at the Moore Hall. And, Somerset Cup for Year 5 & 6 on the last day of school for term 3.
The rise of the playground has been fantastic and there are lots of children waiting expectantly for the opening. I have been advised that most of the groundwork will be finished today and I expect the shade covering work to also be completed today. The speckled coloured soft fall looks great. Fingers crossed we may be able to access the playground in the last week of school.
The planned date change to ball games cannot be accommodated by Esk and Toogoolawah State Schools but as students have dedicated much of their play time to practising, we will go ahead on Wednesday, 17 September. Linville SS will join either Roos or Dingoes and Prep-6 will compete for the trophy and medals. Start time is 11.30 am with an approximate finish time of 2.30 pm. Look out for a sausage sizzle form.
Please check for Parent/teacher/student interview notes, and we look forward to catching up with you. Students will explain their journey in Term 3.
We hope our dads enjoy a 'comfortable' Father's Day and thank you to Mrs Guy, Mrs Blacklock, Kirralee and Mrs Britton for helping students make a wonderful gift for their dads.
Have a safe and enjoyable weekend
Jo McCormick
Principal and Class teacher

Mrs Blackmore for her tasty spinach and feta pastries. We are starting to think about cooking from our garden for Term 4 and trialling a few ideas.
Mrs and Mrs Blackmore for helping Mr Dagun with the concreting in front of the OLA and for the new water tank.

Happy Father's Day

Year P - 3 News

We are now on a quest to write a quest! Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to combine learning to create a narrative. Great narratives will use elements of Kumiko and the Dragon and include lots of imagery to put a picture in the reader's mind.
In HASS students have learnt about the fateful exploration of Burke and Wills and how these men perished in a harsh environment. Their demise opened up the inland of Australia to white inhabitants. We also discussed the effects this had on the First Nations People.
In maths we are assessing our work with volume and capacity and finalising work on angles. Year 3 are learning to use a protractor correctly. It has been easy to find right angles, but we were also on the hunt for examples of acute and obtuse angles in our playground.
In health we are designing t-shirts with a motto about how much sugar is enough and how to be an informed buyer when selecting processed foods.
Please keep the readers returning each Friday. Congratulations to Hugh who has managed to read every week this term.
Our chicks are expected to hatch soon. Mr Glover has them for the weekend and they will return on Monday. Egg-citing times and a great impetus for getting our work done and having some time to study the chicks.

Year 4-6 News - Ms Fisher

Senior Class
Not sure where the last fortnight has disappeared to! It is said that “time flies when you’re having fun” so we must be having LOTS of fun.
Students are wrestling with writing a short fantasy story. They have been placed on a strict “dialogue diet”! Dialogue is not the only way to “show” what is happening in a story and we are working on expanding our range of techniques to create an engaging narrative. Students are adding information in speech tags, showing actions, adding alliteration, and using more sophisticated vocabulary. For the past fortnight our vocabulary focus words have been: motionless, writhing, treacherous, beckoned, and billowed.
Our measurement studies in Maths have moved on from angles to perimeter, area and volume. Students are grappling with which units to use to measure each of these in relation to rectangles. While Year 5s and 6s are using formulas, students are encouraged to understand what they are measuring rather than memorising formulas. They have created paddocks for farms with criteria for different perimeters and areas.
In Science/Technology we are up to building our prototypes for our security systems. Students have identified a security need and will create an electrical circuit to deal with it. Their circuits need a light and/or buzzer as well as a switch to activate the systems at a specified trigger.
This week in HASS students learned that the “four seasons” model isn’t the only way to think about seasons in Australia. They looked at two different areas of the country – one in far north NT and the other in southern WA – to see how indigenous Australians viewed seasons.
Reading folders due Monday!

PLANT STALL
Delicious fresh veggies are now available at the front gate. Look for the Styrofoam box.
All proceeds go back into making our veggie patch even greater.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
We have had a couple of donations of containers this week. One load was pretty big. Hopefully we should be able to fill all 5 bins this week.

POPCORN/JELLY AND CUSTARD
Only 2 more weeks of Jelly and Custard.
Next term we will be back serving Zooper Doopers with our popcorn.
Together we do great things.

Around the School
Students added their names and some handprints to our new concrete outside the Outdoor Learning Area.
