Principal's Report
Firstly, what a privilege to work in such a wonderful school! A huge thank you to all the students, staff, parents and community members who have so warmly welcomed me. It is a true honour to lead such a quality school. There is a true community feel. The students sense of pride in there actions is evident everyday and it is very impressive to watch them take on their daily responsibilities with such precision. This is a credit to the time and effort the wonderful staff at Harlin put in to provide these leadership opportunities. Also, a credit to you, the parents for raising responsible children.
The students and teachers have been hard at work completing end of term assessments. The efforts of all staff to provide every student the opportunity to produce their best work is truly evident. Students have proudly been showing off their work to me!
There has been a few bugs and illnesses around the school this week. A reminder to wash hands regularly and as the weather warms up ensure children have their water bottles and drink plenty of water. While attending school everyday is the target, if students are unwell it is best to stay home and hopefully recover quicker.
Good luck to all students performing in the Concert band and participating in the Somerset Cup this week. I know you have been working hard in preparation.
Hope you all have a wonderful holiday and if you are lucky enough to be heading away to the beach, remember what we learnt about beach safety on Monday; swim between the flags and only up to waist height.
Regards,
Nigel

Prep - 2 News Mrs Packenham
This week we concluded our measuring unit. Students have measured the length, area, capacity and mass of many classroom objects. Measuring capacity using sand or water was definitely the most fun!
During our Maths warm-up time, the students have been working on 1 of the following learning intentions based on the results of a recent number check-in.
We are learning to identify numbers.
We are learning to write numbers correctly.
Check out the wonderful handwriting in the photos below!
Buddy reading has made a come back in the Prep-2 room! The buddy reading routine provides a smooth transition back into learning after breaks as students read with a partner for 10 minutes. This allows students the build their reading fluency and expression as they read aloud, as well as practising decoding skills by sounding out words they are unfamiliar with or by assisting other students with decoding or blending skills. Check out the photos of what buddy reading looks like in our room!
I wish all the families an enjoyable school break. I am taking an extra 2 weeks leave and look forward to returning on Monday of week 3!
Learning is fun!
Year 3-6 News Ms Fisher
Our Year 3s and 4s are modifying their balloon-powered cars scientifically. They have identified the variables that could be changed to potentially make their balloons travel further. After each modification, students measure the new distance travelled before deciding on the next variable to change.
Year 5s and 6s are wiring up a house to demonstrate their Science learning!
In Maths, our Year 6s are studying the order of operations. They have been playing a game online to practise brackets first, followed by multiplication and division, and finally addition and subtraction. In the game, if students are successful, they rescue a royal family who have been abducted! I am happy to report that all royals were successfully rescued!
Our Year 5s are dealing with factors and multiples. They have been searching for factors of numbers using divisibility rules. Students are also solving problems. Any soccer team that needs 2.5kg of ham for sandwiches, our students could help them with how many 375g packets they need to feed the players their lunch!

“Don't forget our biggest band ever happens on Thursday September 14 at 12:30 in the Toogoolawah State School undercover area featuring Harlin State School Concert Band together with Linville State School Concert Band, Toogoolawah State High School Stage Band and Concert Band and Toogoolawah State School Concert Band. The High school will perform first and then we will all play together our new song "Marching Drum" and "I Like Jazz". There may be somewhere between 80 and 90 student musicians performing together from beginners to really big kids. Can you afford to miss this? Come along and make history with us. Warning: You may feel like clicking your fingers along to our last song.”
PBL News
Our end-of-term PBL celebrations will occur on Wednesday! This will be a fun day as it coincides with ‘pizza and lolly bag’ tuckshop and the Student Council’s free dress day. At first break students will have the opportunity to cash-in their Harlin Heroes at a vouchers-only Harlin Hero Shop. All usual vouchers will be available including ‘build a cubby’, ‘teacher’s chair’, ‘cool hat’, ‘hot chips’, ‘ice-cream’, and ‘Prep-2 helper’.
This term teachers and teacher aides participated in professional development around positive relationships and effective classroom management. Positive relationships underpin the PBL philosophy and it is something we do well here at Harlin. We have also been tweaking our expectations matrix and flowchart for responding to behaviour. These will be finalised and shared with students and families next term.

P&C News
Beach To Bush Surf Lifesaving
Beach To Bush
This week we were very lucky to be visited by Surf Life Saving Queensland as part of the Beach to Bush program. We learnt valuable lessons about keeping ourselves safe while swimming at the beach. Skills that will be very important indeed for families lucky enough to be heading to the beach over the upcoming school holidays.
Things we learnt included;
- Swimming between the flags (red and yellow)
- Only go into the ocean to the depth of your waist
- The signal for help waving with a closed fist above your head
- Vinegar or warm/hot water is best for a jellyfish bite, unlike the traditional urban myth cures.
Sommer even got to dress up as a lifeguard and really looked like a professional!
Well done to the whole school for listening intently and great participation in the program.
Fizz! Qld Opera
Students were treated to a wonderful theatrical performance at Esk on Wednesday of Week 8. It’s fabulous that our students have the opportunity to attend these kinds of events and learn to appreciate different kinds of Arts performances.
Mrs Packenham and Ms Graham engage our students with Arts lessons, and attending performances like FIZZ! allow students to experience the theory first hand. The performers at FIZZ! took the time to explain to their audience how theatre if different to a movie cinema. Students might not have realised that the actors could see the audience as well as the audience could see them, and that it’s really important to remain quiet during the performance.
Our students were very respectful of the performance and enjoyed the experience. Maybe we have some budding opera singers amongst us?
