Principal's Report
It has been a great Week 1 with students making a concerted effort to get back into routine. A considerable amount of work was achieved, leaving time for a game or two. Students were shown the appreciation of staff with a surprise icecream after parade. We look forward to continued diligence and commitment as we count down to the end of the year - 44 days!
We have been vigilant with our snake awareness and will continue to remind students of responsible actions if they see a snake. We have also been mindful of being aware where snakes may be basking or moving though to water or shelter.
Our Ball Games practise is progressing with our House Captains assisting team mates to improve their skills before school. Parents and family are welcome to attend the carnival on Friday, 20th Oct. at TSS. The competition starts at 10.30 am and an approximate finish time is 2 pm. Linville SS will be boosting our team numbers as we compete for the Aggregate and Championship trophy against Toogoolawah and Esk State Schools. TSS is offering tuckshop - a hotdog and juice for $6.
Staff conducted a detailed analysis of student number fluency at the end of term 3. We are focussing on gaps we see from our data with small group intervention. Number facts homework will be available and we would value your assistance in helping your child improve their number skills of fluency and automaticity. Extra improvement will emerge from our partnership. Dojos continue to be available for each night of reading. We are also focusing on handwriting across the school with Casey the Caterpillar in P-2 and cursive in 3-6.
Congratulations to Mr Adam Smith and our Instrumental Band. The performance of the band at TSS is a credit to Mr Smith's skill and diligence. Our students need to be commended for their skill development within 3 terms.
Harlin SS was successful in gaining $2500 from the Sporting Schools Grant, to supplement our tennis and swimming programs for Term 4.
Tennis is part of our HPE program this term and starts today. Mr Dennison has partnered with Mr Ian Myles to create 7 weeks of tennis skills. Mr Dennison will focus on the health component of HPE. Mr Myles will provide after school tennis lessons if any parents are interested. Please contact Ian on 0416265103.
Swimming is to be confirmed, but we have scheduled Week 8 for lessons and Week 9 for the swimming carnival with Linville SS.
2024 Leadership nominations will be distributed to year 5 students in Week 5. We look forward to well thought out and structured responses. Lots of practise reading the leadership speech at home will settle nerves.
Esk and Harlin SS have previously undertaken a camp to Canberra every 2nd year for Year 5 & 6 students. I was asked by the P&C to source approximate cost to gauge interest in a Canberra Camp. Year 4 & 5 parents will receive a letter detailing the trip and approximate cost today. I would appreciate constructive feedback and look forward to some interesting ideas. See the idea from Muttaburra SS who did make it to the snow this year!
Thank you for the swift return of permission forms and payments. This makes our workload so much easier.
Have a good week.
Regards
Mrs Jo McCormick
Principal and class teacher.
Prep - 2 News Mrs Packenham
The year P-2 class is already displaying their resilience and their ability to give new things a go this term as they begin term 4.
With Mrs Pakenham on leave for two weeks, students are eagerly explaining to Mrs Cowley how things are done here at Harlin.
Learning is well underway for a trip to the museum later in this term. We are looking at lots of different materials and working out how to classify them according to their various properties, such as strength, flexibility, texture and transparency.
One of our aims will be to design and construct a tool using natural materials, that will carry something between two places. Thinking caps one!
A new phonemic awareness programme,” Heggerty”, has proven popular this week with activities involving sound and movement and opportunities to chant sounds. This is delivered each day in short sessions of approximately 10 minutes.
If students are mentioning “The Magic Caterpillar”, they will be talking about a new book and story which has been designed to reinforce various handwriting movements in a fun way.
Work in Maths has continued to consolidate 2D and 3D shapes. New work will deal with money.
A busy term ahead. It will go so quickly.
Regards,
Mrs Sharon Cowley.
Year 3-6 News Ms Fisher
The senior class is already rockin’ and rollin’ in Term 4!
All students have dived straight back into our Word Work activities. Using thesauruses, students are learning new and more interesting words to use in their writing. New thesauruses are arriving soon, which we are very excited about.
In English this term we are focusing on persuasive texts. As part of our War on Waste unit, students will craft an email asking Somerset Regional Council to organise a “Toy Swap” to help prevent waste. This week students have watched snippets from the ABC television show War on Waste and practised expanding sentences with conjunctions to show their thinking about the issue of fashion waste.
Science sees us studying materials this term. 3s and 4s will investigate the properties of materials and their suitability for different purposes. 5s and 6s will study reversible and irreversible changes. Lots of “hands on” science this term, which will be great fun!
The focus for 5s and 6s for Maths first up this term is on budgeting, percentage discounts and fractions. We’ve already set-up our “shop” so we can practise our skills.

“I love making music together. Working as a team, having a specific role and a clear goal to achieve makes me motivated and that’s why our “Biggest Band Ever” on Thursday September 14 made me so happy and proud when over 80 kids performed as a team together with great rhythmic precision and a super sound that resonated around Toogoolawah. Our kids were super professional and calm and knew all the notes and exactly what to do and where to be. They represented our school so well and it was great to make music with our wider music community.
Watch out for our next performance which is Saturday October 21 at the Soldiers Memorial Hall at 9 Main St. in Moore at 10am. We are going to play all our songs at the markets.
And, we still have two more performances this term. November 24 is the “Carols in the Park” at Cressbrook Park, Toogoolawah and our awards night in Week 10. Details to come.”

P&C News
Welcome back to the final term for the year!
We would like to give a big Thank you to the Esk Community Op Shop for the very generous donations they have given our little school this year. Please support them every chance you get as they have supported us over the past couple of years.
Our P&C are needing some more volunteers for the Tuckshop. If you can lend a hand to cook, co-ordinate the roster or do the shopping please let me know. It is not only parents that can help either, Grandparents, Friends, Members of the community are also welcome to donate their time. We can help to arrange a Bue Card to enable you to do so.
The more help we get, the more often we can offer Tuckshop. It is only 2 hours on a Friday and it is unfortunately our kids that miss out if no one puts their hand up.
Our next meeting is on the 17th October. If you are available please come along & help us to organise some fun things for the end of the year.

FREE Trauma training in Toogoolawah!
LifeFlight Australia and the LifeFlight Australia Training Academy, in partnerships with Somerset Regional Counil, are proud to present the LifeFlight First Minutes Matter FREE trauma training workshops.
This workshop delivers free community trauma training in remote locations that can experience longer than normal wait times for emergency response, in the event of a medical incident. The First Minutes Matter workshops are delivered over a 6 hour period and offer training in life saving techniques and skills and teach people how to best respond in a medical emergency. The program is taught face to face by one our critical care medical staff, who have worked in the pre-hospital setting for many years. A workshop is being held locally at Toogoolawah Bowls Club, 7 Dingyarra Street, Toogoolawah on Tuesday 24 October 2023. To book, please go to firstminutesmatter.org.au.
